BOSTON - Despite three players in double figures, the Boston University women's basketball team (9-10, 5-2 AE) was edged by UMBC (9-11, 3-4 AE), 65-63, on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. The Terriers were led offensively by freshman Chantell Alford with 16 points and she was followed by classmates Kristen Sims and Caitlynn Moran with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Alford, who was BU's America East Player of the Game, shot 9-for-17 from the field with a pair of trey's to reach 16 points, while she also brought down seven boards, and swatted two shots. In addition to Moran's 10 points, she dished out a team-high three assists and collected two steals. Sims, who rounded out the freshman trio in double-digits, was 4-for-9 from the field to go along with two assists. Junior Kerry Cashman and sophomore Caroline Stewart each brought down a team-high eight rebounds.

BU was 32.9 percent from the field and hit 10 3-pointers, while they also made the most of 16 UMBC miscues to score 16 points off turnovers. In addition, the Terriers' 19 offensive rebounds turned into 17 second-chance points; however, UMBC went 11-for-14 from the free throw line including three from Carlee Cassidy in the final 20 seconds that assured the Retrievers' victory.

In the first half, BU trailed by as much as eight points; however, a 12-0 run from 4:55 to 2:02 gave the home squad its first lead since the 15-minute mark and extended it to 35-31. During that spurt, Alford netted seven points to help BU go ahead.

The teams went into the locker rooms at half deadlocked at 37-37 as UMBC's Carlee Cassidy hit a pair of 3-pointers to retake the lead and Alford nailed a mid-range jumper to round out the first-half scoring.

To start the second stanza, BU raced out to its largest lead of the game, 54-47 after junior Kat Briggs hit a pair of threes; however, for the remainder of the game both squads remained within two possessions of each other.

With two seconds remaining in regulation, Briggs once again hit her shot from long range to make it a one-point game, however, Michele Brokans hit the back end of her two free-throw attempts with less than a second to go to secure the win.

BU will look to rebound on Thursday evening when it makes the short trek north to take on UNH at 7 p.m.
