POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Despite a season-high 21 points from sophomore Chantell Alford, the Boston University women's basketball team fell to Marist, 71-55, on Saturday night. The Terriers drop to 3-8 on the season, while the Red Foxes improve to 6-2.
Alford scored 14 of her points in the second stanza and shot 3-for-4 from behind the arc and 6-for-9 from the free throw line, while junior Alex Young contributed 11 points and classmate Caroline Stewart hauled in 13 rebounds.
It was a game of runs with each side going on long scoring stretches, however, the definitive one came early in the second half when the Red Foxes outscored BU 11-0 to push Marist's lead into double figures and it never looked back as it went on to claim the 16-point victory.
BU finished the game shooting 39.1 percent from the field and 60.0 percent from the 3-point arc. Marist outrebounded BU, 41-28, and had 27 defensive boards. The Red Foxes' deep bench also gave them 23 points.
Marist jumped out to an 8-1 lead, which included an opening three from Elise Caron with one second left on the shot clock, and forced BU to burn an early 30-second timeout. Coming out of the break, Young drained a 3-pointer from in front of the Marist bench to cut the deficit in half, 8-4. The trey jumpstarted a 16-2 run that put BU ahead 17-10 by the eight-minute mark, while a tough defense held the Red Foxes without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes.
Despite a poor shooting effort where they shot just 22.2 percent (4-for-18) through the first 13 minutes of the stanza, the Red Foxes rebounded by embarking on a 17-5 stretch over four minutes to reclaim the 27-22 lead. Stewart scored BU's last seven points of the half as it trailed by just five, 32-27, heading into the locker rooms.
To start the second half, Marist outscored BU 11-0 to push its lead into double figures, 43-32. However, Alford scored BU's first 12 points of the stanza to keep the squad within arm's reach as it only trailed by eight, 47-39, heading into the second media timeout at 11:27.
Marist's Corielle Yarde sank a jumper at 8:23 that pushed the lead back into double-digits, 53-42, and the Red Foxes never let it dip below the rest of the way, claiming its largest lead - 16 points, 71-55 - on the final basket of the game.
BU will have a 17-day break before it regroups for a Dec. 28 match-up at Richmond.
