BOSTON - The No. 5 Boston University women's ice hockey team will return to Hockey East play on Saturday (Dec. 4) when it visits Connecticut at 1 p.m.
The Terriers (11-2-3, 3-1-3 HEA) and Huskies (6-8-1, 4-2-1 HEA) last faced off against each other in the 2010 Hockey East title game. Junior Tara Watchorn scored the game-winning goal in overtime to propel the Terriers to their first-ever Hockey East championship and NCAA tournament berth.
Following Saturday's matchup, the Terriers will close out the semester with matchups against Northeastern (Dec. 7) and Harvard (Dec. 10).
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
• BU and UConn are tied for second place in the league with nine points each. The Huskies are 4-2-1 in league play and 6-8-1 overall.
• Last weekend, Connecticut played in the Nutmeg Classic, hosted by Quinnipiac.
• UConn lost to Yale, 5-2, in the opening game before blanking Sacred Heart, 11-0, in the consolation game.
• Freshman Taylor Gross (9-4--13), senior Jennifer Chaisson (3-8--11) and sophomore Kelly Horan (4-6--10) pace the Connecticut forwards.
• Junior Sami Evelyn leads the team's blueliners with eight points (3g, 5a).
• Junior Alexandra Garcia has seen the bulk of action between the pipes, compiling a 5-7-1 record with a .926 save percentage, 2.52 goals-against average and two shutouts.
ALL-TIME VS. UCONN
• The Terriers are 4-9-3 all-time against the Huskies.
• BU is 1-4-2 at Freitas Ice Forum and 2-5-1 at Walter Brown Arena.
• The Terriers have won the only game between the teams on neutral ice.
LAST SEASON VS. CONNECTICUT
• BU was 1-2-1 against UConn last season, with the Terriers losing the regular-season series, 0-2-1.
• The teams played on back-to-back days in December, with BU falling, 4-3, on Dec. 4 and tying UConn, 1-1, at Walter Brown Arena on Dec. 5.
• On Jan. 29, UConn blanked the Terriers, 2-0, at Walter Brown Arena.
• The teams last played in the Hockey East title game, which BU won, 2-1, in overtime.
• Junior Tara Watchorn scored the game-winning goal against the Huskies.
BEST VS. THE HUSKIES
• Seniors Lauren Cherewyk (2g, 3a) and Jillian Kirchner (2g, 2a) have registered five and four points, respectively, against UConn.
• Junior Tara Watchorn (2g, 1a) has recorded three points, while classmates Kasey Boucher and Jenelle Kohanchuk have tallied a goal and an assist each.
• Sophomore Kathryn Miller has scored one goal and classmate Shannon Mahoney has collected one assist.
FINE FRESHMEN
• Freshmen Marie-Philip Poulin and Kerrin Sperry are having great starts to their collegiate careers.
• Poulin leads the nation's rookies in points per game (1.92). She also leads Hockey East in points (23) and assists (12) and is tied for first in goals (11). Poulin was named HE Rookie of the Week after registering four assists against Princeton.
• Sperry is 8-0-2 and ranks ninth in the nation in GAA (1.58). She was named HE Co-Rookie of the Month for November after going 3-0-1 and recording her first collegiate shutout on Nov. 21 with 22 saves against Boston College.
SPECIAL PLAY
• The Terriers boast the best penalty kill in the nation, allowing just four power-play goals on 79 opportunities.
• The Terriers have also scored six shorthanded goals, second best in the nation.
