It was a game of runs as the Boston University women's basketball team (12-11, 8-3 AE) fell to Vermont (20-5, 10-2 AE), 77-59, on Wednesday night at Patrick Gymnasium. Sophomore Alex Young led with a team-high 18 points, while freshmen Chantell Alford and Caitlynn Moran added 13 and 12, respectively.
Young finished the game with 18 points on 7-for-14 shooting with four treys to earn BU's America East Player of the Game honors, while Alford chipped in 13 with a perfect 6-for-6 free-throw shooting performance. Moran, who added 12 points, dished out a team-high five assists and senior Aly Hinton contributed 10 points. Sophomore Caroline Stewart pulled down a team-best 10 boards in the game and junior Kerry Cashman swatted a game-high five shots.
As a team BU shot 34.4 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from behind the arc; however, UVM was an impressive 25-for-30 from the charity stripe. In the battle of the boards, UVM held a 43-41 edge.
Through the first four minutes of action, the Terriers controlled the run of play taking an early 7-2 lead as BU outrebounded UVM 8-4 with six defensive rebounds, which turned into five fast points. The Catamounts then went on a 12-0 run that lasted three minutes to take a 14-7 advantage by the 13:54 mark; however Young hit two more treys to help reduce the deficit to one point, 18-17, at 11:03. A 7-0 spurt reclaimed the lead for the Terriers, 24-22, at 8:11 and over the next four minutes the two squads exchanged leads three times before UVM took a 32-28 lead.
The Catamounts went into halftime with a 43-31 lead after an 11-2 run closed out the stanza. At the break, Young led all scorers with 16 points, while Stewart brought down six boards and Cashman tied a career-best four blocks. During the first 20 minutes of play there were seven lead changes.
To open the second half the Terriers quickly reduced the Catamounts' lead to seven points as Alford netted four points and Cashman added a fastbreak layup in the first 1:15 of the second half. However, an 8-2 spurt by UVM pushed the deficit back to 11, 55-44, with 12:12 remaining in the game. A 7-0 run by BU brought the game to within four points, 55-51, with 9:36 remaining.
The Catamounts went on to take a double-figure lead during a 12-4 run that spanned five minutes and moved the score to 66-54. Eleven made free throws in the final four minutes for UVM maintained its distance and round out the scoring at 77-59.
BU will look to rebound at Albany on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
