Terriers Fall to No. 24 Hartford, 61-38

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Boston University women's basketball team (14-12, 10-4 AE) dropped a 61-38 decision to No. 24 Hartford (23-3, 14-0 AE) on Sunday afternoon at Chase Arena. Sophomore Alex Young and freshman Caitlynn Moran reached double figures for the Terriers with 13 and 10 points, respectively, while sophomore Caroline Stewart brought down a team-high 10 boards.

Young was named BU's America East Player of the Game after netting 13 points on 6-for-15 shooting to go along with four rebounds. Moran was 4-for-14 from the field and converted on both of her free throw attempts. Stewart pulled down double-digit rebounds for the fifth time this season and for the third time in the last four games.

BU and Hartford were close in field goals and 3-pointers, as the Hawks were 17-for-49 from the field and 5-for-18 from behind the arc and the Terriers 16-for-57 from the field and 3-for-19 from the 3-point range; however, the difference was in free-throw shooting as Hartford was 22-for-27 and BU was 3-for-8.

Hartford began the game outscoring BU, 12-2, in the first six minutes of the match; however, Alford broke a five-minute scoring drought on a give-and-go with Cashman in the paint. On the ensuring trip down the court, Hartford turned the ball over when Sims and Cashman double-teamed Hartford's Jackie Smith as BU attempted to swing the momentum in its favor. A strong Hawks defense kept BU scoreless over the next four minutes; however, Hinton drained a three from the top of the arc at 8:38 to move the score to 18-7.

A 7-0 spurt cut the deficit to seven, 18-11, at 6:04; however, to close out the stanza Hartford BU, 5-2, to round out the first-half scoring at 23-13. Young was BU's early points leader with six on 3-for-7 shooting.

In the early going of the second half, Hartford's aggressiveness towards the basket resulted in 10 free-throw attempts - all from Diana Delva - and the forward converted on six chances to move the score to 31-21 at 12:05.

Over the next seven minutes, the Hawks would score seven of its 16 points from the charity stripe to take an 18-point lead, 47-29. During that time Moran hit two jumpers and Alford went in for a layup to six quick points for the Terriers. Hinton drained her second three of the game at 2:50 to bring the score total to 53-36. In the final two minutes hartford converted on two more free-throw chances to round on the score at 61-38.

BU will travel to UMBC on Wednesday (Feb. 24) for a 7 p.m. match-up in Baltimore.
