Also reaching double figures was freshman Caitlynn Moran and sophomore Alex Young with 11 and 10 points, respectively. It was her second double-double of the season.
BU shot 36.2 percent for the game and 39.1 percent from behind the arc.
The Terriers shots fell fast they hit 57.1 percent of their shots in the first five minutes of the game to take a 10-6 lead over the home team. Both teams settled in and the pace settled down and Stewart continued to be dominant on the boards, leading all players with five rebounds in the first eight minutes.
BU extended its lead to seven, 15-8, when Young drained a three from the corner at 11:07 and Moran hit back-to-back shots within a one-minute span to again keep BU ahead by three possessions, 21-14, with 7:48 remaining in the half.
A 16-2 run to close out the half gave BU its largest lead of the stanza, 35-16, when Alford and Sims hit three straight treys. At the break, Alford had hit a team-high nine points, while Stewart brought down a game-high six rebounds. BU shot 48.3 percent on 14-for-29 shooting and 54.5 percent from the 3-point arc with six threes.
BU continued its run into the second half with another three to cap off the run at 19-2 at 19:37 in the second half. Two minutes later, BU's lead extended to 20 points, 41-21, when Moran hit a 3-pointer.
A 19-0 UMBC run quickly cut the deficit to four points, 41-37, with 12:54 remaining. Alford halted the Terriers' five-minute scoring drought with a layup at 12:13. The Retrievers made it a four-point game when they hit their sixth trey of the game, however, Alford quickly quieted the rally with a three of her own on the next possession to move the score to 49-42.
UMBC drew to within one point, 51-50, at 8:08 when Carlee Cassidy hit both her free throw attempts and three minutes later took a three-point lead, 54-51, for the first time since the early moments of the game. A Moran pull-up jumper regained the lead for BU briefly, 55-54, until UMBC's Cassidy came down the other end of the court to move the score to 56-55 in the Retrievers' favor.
With less than 30 seconds remaining, BU began to foul and after Cassidy hit both her free throws, Stewart came down to score a bucket and ultimately round out the scoring at 58-57, in the Retrievers' favor.
BU will close its America East regular season with UNH on Sunday (Feb. 28) at 2 p.m. at Case Gym. In a pre-game ceremony, the Terriers will honor their two seniors - Aly Hinton and Maggie McKemie.
