CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team used first-half goals from senior Allie Dolce and sophomore Jacinda McLeod to post a 2-1 victory over Massachusetts in its home opener on Sunday afternoon at Jack Barry Field. The Terriers, who wore pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness, improve their record to 4-0 - their best start since 1987.

BU, which held a 2-0 lead at the half, held off a second-half charge from the Minutewomen, who got on the board in the 42nd minute and earned six corners in the latter half. UMass falls to 1-3 with the loss.

Dolce opened the scoring in the first minute of play on a goal in transition. Junior Andrea Greene raced up the left side before sliding the ball over to Dolce, who bounced in a shot from five yards out.

The Terriers doubled their lead on their second corner of the afternoon, as McLeod blasted a ball home from the top of the circle on assists from sophomore Rachael White and Dolce at 14:30.

While the first half belonged to BU, the Minutewomen came out the half putting plenty of pressure on the Terrier defense. Senior Katie Kelly got the visitors on the board in the 42nd minute when she redirected an offering from junior Thando Zono off a corner.

Senior Amanda Smith earned the win in goal for the Terriers after shutting out the Minutewomen in the first half despite not facing a shot on goal. Sophomore Julie Collins was in goal for the second half and made three key saves to prevent the Minutewomen from drawing even. Junior Alesha Widdall recorded five saves on the afternoon for UMass.

BU outshot UMass, 13-7, but the Minutewomen held a 7-4 advantage in corners.

The Terriers will return to action on Friday (Sept. 10) when they visit crosstown rival Boston College for a 7 p.m. contest. The ninth-ranked Eagles will also bring an undefeated record into the match-up, having won all five of their games thus far.
