BOSTON - It was a tale of two halves as the Boston University women's basketball team (10-9, 7-0 AE) earned a 58-50 come-from-behind victory over Hartford (6-14, 3-4 AE) on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym. Sophomore Mo Moran had a standout game with 19 points to go along five assists and three steals.
The Terriers trailed for all of the first half and some of the second half, but a crucial 16-5 run in the second stanza swung the momentum in their favor and they went on to claim their seventh straight victory in America East action.
Moran was a vital clog in the Terriers' offense as she shot 7-for-15 from the field with two treys, and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line. For her efforts she was named the America East Player of the Game. Senior Kerry Cashman matched a career high for rebounds for the third time this season as she hauled in 14 boards to go along with an impressive four blocks in 40 minutes. After posting just three points in the first half, sophomore Chantell Alford gave out firing in the second stanza to finish the contest with 15 points.
Most importantly, BU outrebounded Hartford, 43-32, and scored 16 second-chance points, while holding the Hawks to just three points in that situation. The Terriers outscored UH in the paint, 20-16, and forced 18 miscues while converting on 13 points off turnovers.
The Terriers struggled from the field early on, shooting just 29.0 percent in the first half as they hit just nine of their 31 field goal attempts. However, they came out of the locker rooms at halftime reenergized and went on to outscore the Hawks, 38-20, in the second half. They finished the game shooting 35.5 percent with five treys, and were 9-for-13 from the free throw line.
M In the first half, Hartford held the edge as it contained BU to single-digit scoring for 11 minutes and it led by as many as 10 points, 21-11, at the 5:53 mark. Moran and junior Alex Young kept the game within arm's reach as they combined for 13 first-half points. At the break, the Terriers were down by just seven points, 27-20.
BU was on a mission in the second half as it stormed out of the gates outscoring the Hawks 16-5 over a 10-minute period. A jumper by Hartford's Daphne Elliott at 8:45 briefly gave her team a 38-37 edge, but that was the last lead it would enjoy as Cashman sank both of her free throw attempts 30 seconds later to give the Terriers the advantage for good.
BU stretched it to as much as eight points, 52-44, at 2:23 on a 3-pointer by Alford and they went on to claim the seven-point victory with tough defense down the stretch and 3-for-4 free throw shooting in the final minute.
BU returns to action on Wednesday (Jan. 26) when it hosts Binghamton at Agganis Arena at 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast on Comcast SportsNet.
