2011-12 Season Preview

BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team begins the 2011-12 regular season with a Friday night tilt against Providence College at Case Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

All fans in attendance will receive a Domino's Pizza free appetizer coupon as part of the season opening BU basketball doubleheader, which will begin with a pregame Fan Fest at 4 p.m. and follow with the men facing Northeastern at 5 p.m.

The Terriers, who were the America East runners-up last season, return seven juniors and seniors and were selected to finish second in the conference in the preseason coaches' poll. Among those returning is junior guard and America East Player of the Year Chantell Alford.

She led the conference in scoring (15 points per game) and shot 40 percent from beyond the arc. Three other starters from last year will also be back, including senior guard Alex Young, senior forward Caroline Stewart and junior guard Mo Moran.

Providence finished the 2010-11 season with a 13-16 record after losing in the first round of the Big East tourmament. Eleven letterwinners return for head coach Phil Seymore, including three starters from last year's squad.

Senior Teya Wright led the Friars in rebounding (8.0 rpg) and was third in scoring (9.0 ppg). She is joined by senior Symone Roberts, who is the leading scorer (9.3 ppg) among returning players, and senior Lola Wells, who averaged close to 3.5 assists per game.

The two teams last met on Dec. 31, 2010, as the Terriers lost, 65-55, in a hard-fought contest at Providence. BU led by as much as 12 in the first half, but the Friars cut the deficit to three at halftime and later went on an 11-4 run to pull away for the win.

The Terriers' three guards all reached double figures with Alford dropping in 19 points to lead the way. Young poured in 16 points and Moran recorded 11 points, while Stewart hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds.

Providence owns a 15-6 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last 12 meetings dating back to the 1985-86 season. The Friars mark the first of three Big East programs on the schedule for BU.

After the home opener, the Terriers will embark on a trek down the Mass Pike to take on Massachusetts. Game time at Amherst, Mass., is scheduled for 2 p.m.
