The Boston University men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional on Saturday at the Audubon Golf Course in Amherst, N.Y., located just outside of Buffalo.
Both teams will contend for the title, as each squad will be sending seven harriers to the event. BU finished tied for first on the men’s side at the America East Championships two weeks ago, but lost out on the tiebreaker to ultimately claim second place. The Terriers also finished second as a team on the women’s side at the AE Championships.
Sophomore Rich Peters leads the men’s team, as he already has two individual victories to his name this season. He finished first at the Bryant Invitational and the Codfish Bowl, and won All-Conference honors with his fourth-place finish at the AE Championships. Senior Peter Gilmore also received All-Conference honors after his sixth-place performance two weeks ago. All seven runners competing on Saturday finished in the top-30 at the conference championships.
The women’s squad will be led by senior Katie Matthews. The Rocky Hill, Conn., native already has one victory this season, as she claimed first place at the 2011 New England Championships. She placed second at the AE Championships, just three seconds behind the winner, to earn All-Conference honors. Sophomore Rosa Moriello also reaped All-Conference honors with her fifth-place finish.
Last year, the BU men claimed seventh place out of 39 teams, while the Terrier women finished 10th out of 39 teams.
The men’s 10K race will take place at 12 p.m., and the women’s 6K race will begin at 1:15 p.m.
