CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Chantell Alford scored a season-high 23 points as Boston University posted a 70-62 win at Boston College on Tuesday night. BU improves to 6-4 on the season with its first win against the Terriers' crosstown rival since Jan. 31, 1990.
Alford led all players with 23 points, going 7-of-14 from the field and 4-for-4 from the foul line. Classmate Mo Moran netted 17 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Alford and Moran both hauled in six rebounds.
Senior Caroline Stewart led the Terriers with 10 rebounds and added eight points while sophomore Rashidat Agboola also posted eight points to go with five rebounds. BU shot 45.5 percent for the game while BC converted on 43.8 percent of its attempts (21-48). The Terriers out-rebounded the Eagles, 32-29. BC committed 15 turnovers while BU turned the ball over 11 times.
The Eagles began the game with a 6-0 run before Young got the Terriers on the board with a three-pointer at the 17:30 mark. Alford followed with another three on the Terriers' next possession to knot the score at 6-6. The teams traded baskets and BU took its first lead of the night with a layup from Stewart to go up 10-9, but the advantage was short-lived, as Kristen Doherty hit a jumper to spark a 6-0 run for the Eagles.
Down 25-16, the Terriers used a 5-0 spurt to pull within four points, 25-21, but BC quickly extended its advantage with a three-pointer from Tiffany Ruffin. Later, a 7-0 run capped by a trey from Alford tied the score at 30-30 with four and a half minutes to play. BC broke free from the tie but Moran and Alford stole the lead with a pair of three-pointers to go up 37-36 with just over a minute remaining. The Eagles connected on the last shot of the opening stanza to take a 38-37 lead into halftime.
Stewart hit the first basket of the second half to put the Terriers on top but BC countered with five unanswered points to regain the lead. Terriers tied the game at 43-43 with a layup from Moran to start 10-3 run to take a 51-46 lead with a timeout called 13:37.
After a jumper from Tiffany Ruffin at 12:52, the Terriers held the Eagles scoreless for over four minutes, as BU took its largest lead of the night, 61-50, with 8:36 to play. BC followed with two-straight baskets to cut its deficit to six, 61-55. The Terriers were held without a field goal for the final 3:55 minutes of the game but BU won the game from the charity stripe, converting on seven-of-eight shots, to capture the 70-62 victory.
The Terriers will take a 16-day break from action before heading to New York to take part in the Fordham Holiday Classic on Dec. 29-30.
