Terriers Come Up Short Against Albany, 77-68

BOSTON - In a tightly contested game that saw 15 lead changes, the Boston University women's basketball team came up short against Albany, 77-68, on Wednesday night at Case Gym. All five BU starters reached double figures in the loss as the Terriers fall to 13-10 overall and 10-1 in America East action.

The game stayed within two possessions for most of the action and was as close as two points, 67-65, with 1:24 showing on the clock, however, with under a minute to go BU began to foul and the Great Danes converted on 5-of-6 free throw attempts to seal the nine-point victory.

Both teams brought down 34 boards, however, Albany was more effective from the charity stripe going 19-for-25 while BU was 9-for-14. The Terriers shot .433 from the field and was 7-for-18 from behind the arc.

Sophomore Mo Moran led the Terriers' starting five in double digits, pouring in 15 points, while junior Alex Young added 14 with nine coming from behind the arc to earn America East Player of the Game accolades. Sophomore Chantell Alford chipped in 13 second-half points, and senior Kerry Cashman and junior Caroline Stewart added 10 points apiece. Cashman and Stewart also brought down eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

To start the game, the two teams exchanged leads five times in the first 10 minutes and neither was able to extend its respective lead beyond three points until Young nailed a trey at 8:59 to give BU a four-point advantage, 22-18. Albany responded with a 6-2 spurt to tie the game, 24-24, and UA's Cassandra Callaway scored 12 points in the first 15 minutes.

BU and Albany were shooting lights out in the first half, hovering just above .500 from the field, before heading into the locker rooms at halftime with the score knotted, 37-37.

The second stanza started similarly to the first as the two squads went back-and-forth until the Terriers went on an 11-2 run that put them up by eight points, 57-49 - their largest lead of the game. An energized Albany side responded with an 18-5 outburst which gave the visitors a 65-59 advantage with 3:24 remaining in regulation.

A 3-pointer by Moran with 2:40 showing on the clock cut the deficit to three points, 65-62, and just over a minute later Alford converted on a three-point play to make it a two-point game, 67-65. However, Albany responded with three quick points and with under a minute to go and down by five, BU began to foul. Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch by the Great Danes closed out the victory as they 5-for-6 during that stretch.

BU will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 13 when it travels to Hartford to take on the Hawks at 1 p.m. on Comcast SportsNet.
