NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Senior Erica Baumgartner, junior Hannah Frey and sophomore Danielle Etrasco helped lift the Boston University lacrosse team to a 12-5 win over Yale at Reese Stadium on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Terriers improved to 4-4 overall and 3-0 against Ivy League teams.
After trailing 4-3 with seven minutes remaining in the opening half, BU went on an 8-0 run to take an 11-4 lead with 10:26 left in the game. In the second stanza, the Terriers held Yale (1-6) to just one goal, the fewest since allowing one marker in the first half against New Hampshire on May 6, 2010.
Baumgartner recorded a game-high six points (2g, 4a), as she tied Xan Weitzel ('10) for second place on the program's all-time assists list (106). The Silver Spring, Md., native is now just two helpers away from tying Mary Beth Miller ('06) for most in program history.
Etrasco and Frey both added four goals, while junior Molly Swain collected two goals and classmate Catie Tilton recorded an assist. Freshman goalkeeper Christina Sheridan made eight saves.
The Terriers outshot Yale by a 27-22 margin and controlled ground balls, 23-15, and draw controls, 10-9. BU was 1-for-5 on free-position shots, while Yale was 3-for-9.
Yale took a 2-0 lead 6:44 into the game. Devon Rhodes scored on a free-position shot at 4:16 and added an unassisted tally 2:28 later. Etrasco made it a 2-1 contest with 22:43 left in the half when she scored off a feed from Baumgartner.
Myra Trivellas regained the two-goal lead for the Bulldogs when she scored on a free-position shot. Baumgartner then tallied twice in a 1:58 span to tie the game.
The attacker netted her first goal with 18:43 left. After initially losing her footing, Baumgartner slipped past a Yale defender before sending a high shot in for the goal. She tallied again at 13:15 after coming out from behind the net.
Rhodes gave Yale a 4-3 lead 15 seconds later before the Terriers tallied four straight to close the first half with a 7-4 advantage. With 5:17 left in the first, Baumgartner set up Frey, who was cutting toward the net. The pair connected again just 21 seconds later as BU grabbed a 5-4 lead.
The Terriers took a 7-4 advantage with two more goals from Etrasco. With 3:38 left in the half, Etrasco received Tilton's pass from behind the net and scored while cutting toward the cage. She tallied again just 1:13 later after bouncing a shot into the goal.
BU continued its dominant play in the second half as it outscored Yale by a 5-1 margin. Swain opened the frame's scoring with a free-position goal between the goalkeeper's legs at 5:21. Etrasco's fourth of the game with 16:40 remaining made it a 9-4 contest. Swain added her second marker with 14:06 left.
Frey scored her third of the game at 19:34 to make it 11-4 before Yale ended their 29:45 scoreless drought with Trivellas' free-position goal with 7:15 left. With 4:42 remaining in the contest, Baumgartner found Frey, who was cutting toward the net, to account for the 12-5 final.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (March 26) when they open their America East schedule against Binghamton. Game time at Nickerson Field is set at 1 p.m.
