BOSTON - The Boston University lacrosse team garnered goals from four different players as it fell to crosstown rival Harvard, 16-6, at Nickerson Field on Wednesday evening. The Terriers dropped their fourth straight game and fell to 6-8 with the loss.
Harvard, which jumped out to a 5-0 lead, grabbed a 10-3 advantage after the first half. BU opened the second stanza on a 3-1 run to make it an 11-6 contest, but the Crimson closed the game with five straight markers.
Senior Rachel Collins and sophomore Danielle Etrasco, who was named America East Player of the Game, registered a pair of goals each, while junior Catie Tilton collected two assists. Etrasco also notched a team-high four draw controls and added one ground ball and a caused turnover.
Freshman goalkeeper Christina Sheridan, who also played the entire second half, started for the Terriers and allowed the first five goals. Sophomore Kim Elsworth played the remaining 15:38 of the opening stanza and made one save.
BU held a 13-11 advantage in draw controls, but the Crimson (8-4) dominated ground balls, 18-8, and caused turnovers, 13-8. The Terriers were 9-for-9 on clears and 0-for-3 on free-position shots, while Harvard finished 17-for-20 and 3-for-5, respectively.
The Crimson took a 5-0 lead in the first 14:22 of the game. After Danielle Tetreault's third marker gave Harvard the five-goal advantage, junior Hannah Frey put the Terriers on the scoreboard with 15:04 left in the half. From behind the cage, Tilton fed Frey, who was streaking toward the net.
Harvard answered with four markers, including two from Jess Halpern, in a 6:39 span as it grabbed a 9-1 lead. BU answered when Etrasco collected the ensuing draw and cut down the middle of the field before sending a shot to the back of the net.
With 2:08 left in the half, Collins brought the Terriers to within six goals after collecting a ground ball in front of the Harvard cage and shooting the ball high.
The Crimson added a marker late in the first and another tally less than three minutes into the final stanza, but the Terriers responded with three straight goals to make it an 11-6 game.
From behind the net, Tilton and Collins connected at 9:57 of the second. With 16:49 remaining, Etrasco scored after driving through the Crimson defense and, 5:54 later, freshman Elizabeth Morse tallied from the middle of the circle.
Harvard ended the game on a 5-0 run in the final 10:25 to account for the 16-6 final.
The Terriers will return to conference action on Saturday (April 23) when they visit Stony Brook. Opening draw is set at 1 p.m.
