BOSTON - Coming off an appearance in the 2011 NCAA title game, the Boston University women's ice hockey program and head coach Brian Durocher have announced the team's 2011-12 schedule.
The Terriers, now in their seventh year as a varsity program, have a 34-game regular season that is highlighted by seven contests against the three other teams that qualified for last year's Frozen Four. BU will host the 34th Women's Beanpot at Walter Brown Arena on Jan. 31 and Feb. 7.
After an exhibition at home on Sept. 24 against the Ottawa Senators of the Provincial Women's Hockey League, BU will open its season when it welcomes North Dakota to Boston for a pair of games on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.
That kicks off a five-game homestand which includes a visit by Niagara the following weekend (Oct. 7-8) and a contest against Union on Oct. 15.
BU will close out October with a pair of long trips, as the Terriers will head to the North Country to take on Clarkson (Oct. 21) and St. Lawrence (Oct. 22) before heading to Wisconsin for a two-game series with the Badgers on Oct. 28-29 in a rematch of last year's national championship.
The Terriers' final non-conference series will take place on Nov. 25-26 when they travel to Ithaca, N.Y., to face off against Cornell. BU topped the Big Red, 4-1, in last year's Frozen Four.
At the Beanpot, BU will take on Harvard in the opening round before taking on either Boston College or Northeastern the following week.
"This year's schedule will be the most challenging one in our seventh year as a program," said Durocher. "With trips to the North Country, Cornell and Wisconsin, we certainly will be facing some of the nation's top teams on the road. The season-opening series with UND and a game with Harvard at home will also create big obstacles in our non-league schedule. Hopefully this will prepare us well for the battles we will face in Hockey East night in and night out."
BU opens Hockey East play in November with five consecutive league tilts, beginning with a short trip down Commonwealth Avenue to face archrival Boston College on Nov. 2. Three days later, the Eagles, who also advanced to last year's Frozen Four, will visit the Terriers.
The first half of the schedule wraps up on Dec. 7 when BU visits crosstown rival Northeastern. After a month-long break for exams and the holidays, the Terriers will resume play on Jan. 8 at Maine.
In all, 10 of the Terriers' 21 conference games will take place at home, including a contest against Northeastern at Agganis Arena on Jan. 28. BU will close out the regular season at Walter Brown Arena on Feb. 19 in the back end of a home-and-home with Connecticut.
