KINGSTON, R.I. - The Boston University women’s basketball team posted a 54-29 victory over Rhode Island Tuesday night at the Ryan Center. BU improves to 4-3 on the season while URI drops to 2-4.
The Rams’ 29 points was the lowest point total allowed by the Terriers since their 56-31 victory over Stony Brook on Feb. 11, 2012. The last time BU held an opponent to under 30 points was on Dec. 3, 1994, when the Terriers defeated Lafayette, 79-29.
Senior Chantell Alford led the Terriers with 17 points and classmate Mo Moran added 13 points and a team-high eight assists. Junior Rashidat Agboola grabbed 14 rebounds and tallied eight points.
The Rams were led by Samantha Tabakman’s nine points and game-high 15 rebounds. Emilie Cloutier added six points for URI.
BU ended the game with a 39.3 field goal percentage (22-of-56) and a 46.2 percent clip from beyond the arc (6-of-13). URI shot 18.9 percent (10-of-53) and went 2-for-6 (33.3 percent) from the 3-point line. BU out-rebounded URI, 46-39.
The teams got off to a slow start with URI scoring the first basket of the game at 16:57. BU responded with 14 unanswered points, including four 3-pointers from four different players, to grab a 14-2 lead at 9:43 following a trey from Alford. The Rams got their second field goal of the game, and first basket in over seven minutes, with a layup from Tati Johnson at the 9:22 mark.
The Terriers continued their 3-point scoring streak with a pair of treys from Moran and Alford to take a 20-6 lead with 4:07 remaining in the half. Agboola tallied the first points in the paint for BU off a layup with 2:12 to play and the Terriers took a 22-9 lead into the break.
BU opened the second half by driving to the basket, as the Terriers first six field goals of the second period were layups that gave BU a 34-13 lead with 13:54 to play. The Rams connected on their first 3-pointer of the game off the hands of Tayra Melendez at the 12:14 mark to spark a quick 5-0 spurt for URI. Moran ended the streak with a jumper from Moran.
The Terriers pushed their lead to 20 points with a layup from Danielle Callahan at 8:05 to ignite a 5-0 run for BU. URI connected on its second 3-pointer of the game, and first field goal in over seven minutes, with 1:21 to play and closed the game with a pair of free throws from Megan Straumann, as BU claimed the 54-29 victory
The Terriers return to Case Gym for the first time in over two weeks on Saturday (Dec. 1), when they host St. John’s. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Saturday’s game is NCAA Take A Kid to the Game Day. Fans will receive a free kid’s ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket (offer valid at Box Office only).
