Terriers Earn 73-50 Victory Over UMass

BOSTON - Senior Chantell Alford and junior Rashidat Agboola combined for 37 points, as the Boston University women's basketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts, 73-50, Wednesday night at Case Gym. BU earned its third consecutive victory to improve to 6-3 on the season while UMass drops to 2-7 on the year.

Agboola recorded her second straight double-double with a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds while also blocking three shots. The junior now has three double-doubles on the season and 11 for her career. Alford contributed 17 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Senior Mo Moran was third on the team with nine points in addition to seven rebounds and four assists.

Junior Whitney Turner added a career-high 10 rebounds to go with eight points and three blocks while senior Kristen Sims also scored eight points.

The Minutewomen were led by Rashida Timbilla who posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while Millie Niggeling and Jasmine Watson added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

BU shot a season-best 48.3 percent (29-of-60) from the field while limiting UMass to a 33.3 percent clip (20-of-60). The Terriers out-rebounded the Minutewomen, 39-36, and tallied eight blocks on the night. BU scored 19 points off of 16 UMass turnovers and the Terriers held the lead throughout the entire game.

BU opened the game with seven unanswered points before UMass scored its first basket of the game at the 17:53 mark. The Minutemen added a 3-pointer from Emily Mital on their next possession but BU's defense then held UMass to a single field goal in the span of nine minutes while the Terriers extended their lead to 25-9 with 8:17 to play.

The Minutewomen came within 16 points, 27-11, following a layup from Timbilla, but BU quickly extended its lead with a layup from Moran on the Terriers' next possession. Turner's jumper key with 1:16 to play in the first gave BU a 35-15 advantage and UMass added another basket from Aisha Rodney to send the teams into the break with the Terriers up, 35-17.

Similar to the first period, the Terriers opened the second half with a 6-0 run before the Minutewomen converted a layup over four minutes into the stanza. Agboola countered with a layup on the Terriers' next possession and Sims followed with a pair of free throws to give BU a 45-19 lead with 15:21 to play.

The Terriers took their largest lead of the game at the 8:36 mark following a 3-pointer from Alford to put BU ahead, 60-29. UMass followed with a pair of layups from Jasmine Watson before freshman Katie Poppe drained a 3-pointer for BU. Adriana Jordan connected on a pair of shots from the charity stripe after a technical foul was assessed to BU with 4:29 to play.

The free throws cut the Terriers lead to 63-42 but that was as close as UMass would get, as BU cruised to the 73-50 victory.

Next up for BU is a trip to Poughkeepsie, N.Y., to face Marist on Saturday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
