BURLINGTON, Vt. - The No. 10 Boston University women's hockey team scored three goals in the first period and four in the third period as the Terriers defeated Vermont, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Junior Isabel Menard notched the first two goals of the game and added an assist in the third for a three-point afternoon, while senior captain Jenn Wakefield also tallied twice. Sophomore Kerrin Sperry made 20 saves to preserve the win.
Six different skaters scored for BU (17-13-1, 11-7-0 WHEA) and 15 Terriers recorded at least one point. The team's depth was on full display, as someone from each of the four lines and each of the three defensive pairings contributed at least one point.
Senior Tara Watchorn, junior Kathryn Miller, sophomore Marie-Philip Poulin and freshman Kayla Tutino all added two assists as the Terriers defeated Vermont (4-19-6, 3-13-2) for the second time this season.
Menard got the Terriers on the board first at the 7:03 mark of the opening period. Senior Carly Warren did well at the blue line to keep the puck in the offensive zone and push it to Poulin. The sophomore then slid it to Menard, who wristed the puck from below the left circle past Catamount goaltender Roxanne Douville (26 saves) for a 1-0 lead.
The Terriers made it 2-0 a little over 10 minutes later, as once again Menard and Poulin combined. Tara Watchorn began the play by bringing the puck into the zone and dropping it for Poulin, who fired a shot that was blocked. Menard picked up the loose puck and fired it into the net for her 15th goal of the season.
It took just 24 seconds for BU to extend its lead to three. Caroline Campbell dished the puck from the left half-wall to Mahoney whose first shot from in front of the net rang the crossbar. She converted her second chance, however, for her second strike of the season. Watchorn was credited with her second assist of the contest.
Vermont came out with a more focused attack in the second period, but Sperry was up to the task early, as she made several key saves, including a nifty right pad save at the end of an early power play chance for Vermont. The Catamounts finally broke through at the 8:49 mark of the stanza when Krystal Baumann redirected a puck past Sperry. Then, at the 10:03 juncture of the frame, Kellie Dineen fired a slap shot by Sperry to cut the Terriers' lead to 3-2.
The Catamounts then earned a power play opportunity 48 seconds after their second goal. The BU penalty kill was fantastic, however, generating several solid scoring chances and possessing the puck for a majority of the two-minute minor.
The terrific penalty killing paid off for the Terriers with 6:48 remaining in the period. Junior Britt Hergesheimer saw her shot from the right post slide across the crease and onto Tutino's stick. The rookie sensation then fed Wakefield, who roofed a shot over Douville to make it a 4-2 game.
It became a 4-3 game a little over three minutes later when Chelsea Rapin scored on a rebound after Amanda Pelkey's initial shot hit the post. Rapin's power play tally was the last of the scoring in a busy middle session.
The Terriers took control of the game in the third period, beginning with a 4-on-4 tally 4:36 into the frame. Junior Jill Cardella forced a turnover and created a 2-on-1 with Menard, who streaked up the right wing. Cardella fed Menard, who dished it right back to Cardella for an easy finish.
Less than two minutes later, BU made it 6-3 when Taylor Holze beat Douville with a close-range wrist shot. Freshman Shannon Stoneburgh collected her first collegiate assist on the goal and now has a point in two straight games.
The goal parade continued 2:02 after Holze's strike when sophomore Louise Warren, stationed on the left post redirected junior Kathryn Miller's blast from the right point to make it 7-3.
The Catamounts had a late power play chance and elected to pull Douville in favor of an extra attacker to create a 6-on-4 advantage. The move worked, as after Sperry stopped two tough shots, Erin Wente knocked the puck home to make it a 7-4 game.
Immediately following the goal, Douville again left her cage for the bench. The Terriers capitalized this time, as Miller and Tutino combined to get the puck to Wakefield at center ice, from where she deposited her second goal of the game to finish the scoring.
The eight goals were the most the Terriers scored in a single game since Nov. 26, 2010, when they defeated Princeton, 8-2.
BU will look to sweep the season series against Vermont on Sunday when the teams return to Gutterson Fieldhouse. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m.
