Terriers Win Streak Snapped By Albany, 48-41

BOSTON - The Boston University women’s basketball team had its 13-game winning streak snapped by Albany, 48-41, Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. The Terriers remain in the battle for first place in the America East with a 20-7 overall record in league play while Albany stays alive in the race for No. 1 by improving to 19-9 (13-2 AE).

Senior Caroline Stewart led the Terriers with 14 points and added nine rebounds and a steal. Sophomore Rashidat Agboola also collected nine boards to go with four points, two blocks and two assists. Senior Alex Young and rookie Troi Melton chipped in six points each.

Albany’s defense limited BU to a 29.8 percent (17-of-57) field goal percentage and the Terriers went just 3-of-22 from beyond the arc (13.6 percent). After shooting 34.5 percent in the first half, the Great Danes struggled in the last 20 minutes and went just 6-of-25 in the second period to finish the game with a 29.6 percent (16-of-54) mark. Albany went 5-of-13 from three-point land to finish with a 33.3 percent clip.

BU sent Albany to the foul line 20 times and the Great Danes converted on 11 opportunities (55.0 percent). The Terriers went to the line just eight times, hitting four of their shots.

Albany also held the advantage on the boards, 43-41, and forced BU into 20 turnovers, which were the most for the Terriers in conference play.

BU never led in the game, as Albany began with a 15-0 run spanning the first 7:11 of the contest. Melton got the Terriers on the board with a jumper at 11:56 and then hit BU’s next basket just over a minute later. The Great Danes extended their lead to 17 points on three occasions during the next two minutes then took their largest lead of the half, 29-11, after a three-pointer by Lindsey Lowrie at with 4:45 remaining in the first.

Stewart and Mollie McKendrick connected on back-to-back jumpers to give the Terriers a 4-0 spurt but Megan Craig halted any attempt at a BU run with a basket for Albany. Both teams scored on layups to close out the first, as BU went into halftime trailing, 33-17.

Stewart scored the first two baskets of the second half for BU and answered a 5-0 run by the Great Danes with a long jumper at the 12:21 mark. The basket began a 9-0 run by the Terriers that brought their deficit down to 10, 40-30, with 9:48 left in regulation. Albany pushed its lead with a three from Ebone Henry and a layup by Adrienne Jones before Stewart and Young combined for five points to bring the difference down to eight, 45-37.

Almost two minutes passed before Albany regained its double-digit advantage with another layup by Jones. After an offensive rebound by Young, Stewart connected on a jumper to bring BU within eight with just over three minutes remaining on the clock.

The Terriers applied pressure to the Great Danes for the remainder of the game, sending Albany to the charity stripe four times. The Great Danes failed to capitalize until 35 seconds remained, as Lowrie converted from the line. Melton scored a final jumper for the Terriers with seven seconds on the clock, as Albany went on to win 48-41.

The Terriers return to Case Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 22, as BU hosts UMBC for its final home game of the season. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at The Roof.
