BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore Marie-Philip Poulin and senior Jenn Wakefield helped lead the Canadian National Women's Team to the gold medal at the IIHF World Women's Championship.
Team Canada bested the United States, 5-4, in overtime on Saturday night to win its first gold medal in the World Championship since 2007. Canada had won three straight silver medals until this year.
Wakefield and Poulin were joined by former Terrier Catherine Ward. The trio combined for 10 points (4g, 6a) over the five-game tournament. Poulin led the BU representatives with three goals and four assists for seven points. She was also tied for third among Team Canada skaters with a plus-7 rating.
Ward finished the tournament with two assists while Wakefield collected one goal. It was the third World Championship appearance for Poulin and Ward, while Wakefield competed in her second straight tournament.
