The Boston University women’s lacrosse team will conclude the home portion of its regular-season schedule on Sunday when the Terriers host Canisius at Nickerson Field. Opening draw is slated for 12 p.m.
The Terriers will honor their senior class before the game, as Brittany Carlin, Hannah Frey, Mandy Rogers, Annie Stookesberry, Molly Swain and Catie Tilton will be participating in their last regular-season game at Nickerson Field. Over the last four season, the sextet has helped guide BU to a 43-27 overall record and a 20-3 America East mark, leading the Terriers to two America East titles and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.
It will also be Boston Cannons Day at Nickerson, as the 2011 MLL Champions will be in attendance. Cannons players Jon Hayes, Kevin Gould and Jake Beebe will be signing autographs and fans will have an opportunity to get their picture taken with the Steinfeld Trophy. There will also be a free raffle for tickets to the Cannons’ home opener on Saturday, April 28.
This is the first time that BU (9-5, 5-0 America East) and Canisius have met. The Terriers are coming off a 15-14 win over then-No. 19 Stony Brook to clinch at least a share of the America East regular-season title and the top seed in the conference tournament. Frey found the back of the net four times to lead BU, while freshman Mallory Collins collected the game-winning goal with 3:12 remaining in regulation.
Collins claimed America East Rookie of the Week honors on Monday for the second straight week. She scored five goals and added one assist over two games last week and garnered the award for the fifth time this season. She is second on the squad in goals (43) and points (50). Junior Danielle Etrasco leads the team in goals (46) and points (61), while sitting second with 15 assists. Tilton has totaled a team-best 33 assists for the Terriers this year.
Junior goalkeeper Kim Elsworth earned her first win of the season on Saturday, as she matched a career high with nine saves against Stony Brook. She is 1-0 with a 10.57 goals-against average and a .429 save percentage. Sophomore Christina Sheridan has started all 14 games this season and owns an 11.97 goals-against average and a .396 save percentage.
Canisius (7-7, 3-2 MAAC) will play Iona on Saturday before traveling to Boston for Sunday’s contest, which will conclude its regular-season. Entering Saturday, the Golden Griffins have won five of their last seven games. Senior Megan Oosting leads Canisius with 45 goals and is second with 52 points. Her classmate, Carly Quinn, has a team-best 37 assists and is first with 61 points.
Freshman Kayla Scully and junior Gina Molfetta have each played in 10 games and started seven of them. Scully owns a 10.52 goals-against average and a .433 save percentage, while Molfetta has an 11.83 goals-against average and a .324 save percentage. Scully has played nearly 76 more minutes than Molfetta has this season.
BU will conclude the regular-season next Saturday (April 28) when the Terriers travel to Binghamton for the final conference contest of the season. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
