JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior Allison Barwise won the high jump at the 2012 NCAA East Preliminaries and sophomore Rich Peters finished first in his heat in the 1,500-meter race, as both qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held June 6-9 at Drake University.
Barwise tied East Carolina's Tynita Butts for the top height on Friday evening in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.81 meters. That height matches her effort from this season's NCAA indoor meet, where she placed fifth to earn All-America honors.
Peters ran a 3:48.46 to cross the line first in the second heat of Saturday's 1,500 to clinch a spot at the national meet. Like Barwise, he received All-America accolades back in March by finishing runner-up in the mile run.
Two sophomores on the women's side finished just short of qualifying for the NCAAs on Saturday, as Monica Adler finished 14th in the 1,500 with a time of 4:20.98 and Rosa Moriello placed 16th in the 5,000 at 16:38.59.
Adler finished less than half-a-second behind Virginia's Morgane Gay, who took the 12th and final qualifying spot.
The men's 4x400 relay team of sophomore Stephen Vitale, juniors Tewado Latty and R.J. Page and senior Joel Senick turned in a time of 3:09.41 to place 20th.
On Friday, Vitale ran the 400-meter hurdles in 51.91 to finish 18th in the quarterfinals. Latty placed 21st in the 400-meter quarterfinals with a time of 47.16, while Page came in 34th in the 200-meter prelims (21.30).
