BOSTON - The Boston University women’s soccer team was unable to overcome an early goal by Massachusetts as UMass defeated BU, 1-0 Friday night at Nickerson Field.

UMass scored the only goal of the game in the seventh minute, as BU’s record drops to 3-5-1 with the loss. The Minutewomen move to 3-4-0 on the season.

The Terriers recorded seven shots on goal with freshman Rachel Blauner leading the team with two shots on target but Emily Cota stopped every shot she faced in her first game of the season in net for the Minutewomen. Overall, BU outshot UMass, 12-4, and held a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks.

UMass scored the lone goal of the contest in the seventh minute when a defensive miscue allowed Jackie Bruno an open shot on net. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Green stepped out of position in attempt to clear the ball but Bruno beat her to it and put away her shot to give UMass a 1-0 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game.

BU appeared to have the momentum early in the game, as the Terriers were rewarded a pair of corner kicks in the first five minutes of the match. Sophomore Kai Miller got a piece of the ball following a corner kick from junior Megan McGoldrick in the fourth minute of the contest but Cota was there for the save.

BU held possession for the remainder of the first half and ended the period with four shots on goal, compared to UMass’ two attempts.

The second half was a battle of defense and the Terriers did not allow a shot on goal in the last 45 minutes of the contest. Blauner had a pair of opportunities to find the back of the net, including a shot that Cota punched over the crossbar in the 79th minute, which was the last scoring chance for either team. The Minutewomen held on and completed the shutout with the 1-0 victory.

BU concludes its non-conference slate with a trip to N.C. State on Thursday, Sept. 20. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
