CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Freshmen Jenna Fisher and Clare Pleuler each netted a goal for the Terriers as the Boston University women’s soccer team battled Harvard to a 2-2 draw Monday night at Soldiers Field Stadium. BU moves to 3-2-1 on the season while Harvard goes to 1-0-1.
Fisher scored her second goal of the season in the 38th minute while Pleuler found the back of the net for the first time of her collegiate career in the 64th minute. Pleuler led the team with four shots while junior Kylie Strom posted a team-high two shots on goal.
Junior Andrea Green played all 110 minutes in net for the Terriers and ended the contest with four saves.
BU held a 20-18 advantage in shots and a 7-6 lead with shots on goal. Harvard’s keeper, Bethany Kanten, made five saves on the night.
The Crimson scored the first goal of the game in the fifth minute with a header from Taryn Kurcz. Erika Garcia was credited with the assist as she threw the ball in from the far sideline to the center of the box. Kurcz was in position to knock the ball past Green with a header to give Harvard an early 1-0 lead.
Harvard nearly added to its lead in the 11th minute following a throw-in from Aisha Price. Elizabeth Weisman controlled the ball 10 yards out in front of the net and fired a shot but Green made a diving save to keep the score at 1-0.
Sophomore Taylor Krebs had a great scoring chance for the Terriers in the 24th minute when she blasted a shot point-blank from the left of the net but Kanten was there to make the save and keep the Crimson on top, 1-0.
Fisher netted the equalizer for the Terriers in the 38th minute of the contest off a corner kick from Strom. Fisher controlled the ball after a deflection off a defender and caught Kanten out of position as she blasted a shot from 15 yards out to the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
BU took the lead in the 64th minute as Krebs found Pleuler for the rookie’s first goal of the season. Krebs booted the ball down the right sideline and found Pleuler on a breakaway with a pair of Crimson defenders trailing her. Pleuler fired a shot from 12 yards out past Kanten to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead.
Harvard knotted the game at 2-2 just over four minutes later with Kurcz’s second goal of the game. Peyton Johnson earned the assist as she took a free kick and sent the ball towards Kurcz who knocked in a header from 15 yards out to tie the match.
Terriers had the opportunity to take the lead again in the 74th minute when Krebs set Fisher up with a pass from the right sideline. Fisher got the ball just outside the box but her shot went wide right and the game remained tied as regulation expired.
Neither team was able to generate a good scoring opportunity in the first overtime period. Harvard recorded a pair of shots while Pleuler sent the ball wide of the next in the first extra period.
Senior Megan McGoldrick had the opportunity to net the game winner in the 105th minute following a foul on the Crimson. McGoldrick lined up at the top of the box to the left of the net to take the free kick but sent the ball over the crossbar.
Next up for the Terriers is a trip to the West Coast for the Stanford Nike Invitational. BU first takes on the defending national champion, No. 3 Stanford, Friday (Sept. 7) at 10 p.m. (ET). The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network. The Terriers then end the tournament with a match against No. 24 Santa Clara, Sunday (Sept. 9) at 4 p.m. ET.
