Terriers Blank Bison For Third Straight Win, 3-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Goals from senior Margy Porta, junior Samantha Aronson and senior Mackenzie Stickelman powered the Boston University women's soccer program to its third consecutive win with a 3-0 triumph over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Emmitt Field.

All three goals from the Terriers (6-4-3, 3-1-1 PL) occurred on set pieces as BU gained a lead in the 13th minute it would not relinquish, handing the Bison (3-6-5, 1-1-3 PL) their first Patriot League loss this season.

Stickelman finished with a team-high three points and three shots on goal. Classmate Giulianna Gianino posted two assists. Sophomore goalkeeper Bridget Carr needed just two saves to earn the clean sheet.

Bucknell goalkeeper Reese Dolan collected eight saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Bucknell threatened on its first corner kick of the match in the 12th minute when Sydney Hess met the insert. Carr and sophomore Olivia Avellar pounced on the low angle try with the former snaring the shot right on the goal line.
  • The Terriers generated their own corner moments later. Gianino inserted to Stickelman for a header chance. That bounced in front of the goal line, where Porta turned to find the netting for a 1-0 lead.
  • BU's defense came up strong again in the 18th minute after Carr initially punched away a corner kick. Gaby Parker redirected a shot from atop the box, but Avellar squared up the shot for a team save by the right post.
  • In the 38th minute, Aronson made a run into the left side of the box and was tripped up, drawing a penalty kick. The junior beat Dolan to the right side of the nylon to push BU's lead to 2-0 ahead of the break.
  • After halftime, Avellar nearly pushed the lead to three with a 15-yard flick on net. However, a Bison defender was on the line to deny her chance in the 50th minute.
  • Stickelman turned on a 20-yard try that Dolan skied over the crossbar in the 54th minute. Stickelman headed in Gianino's insert on the corner kick to make it 3-0.
  • Senior Helene Tyburczy provided a dangerous try off a corner kick in the 67th minute, but her left-footed flick was met with a diving stop from Dolan at the doorstep.
  • BU did not allow a shot following Katie Connell's try in the 69th minute while peppering Dolan with seven further opportunities. The netminder made a diving play on Aronson' attempt at a brace in the 83rd minute.
STATS
  • BU posted a 15-11 edge in shots and 12-3 in shots on goal.
  • Twelve of those Terrier shots came in the second half after BU scored on its first two tries of the match.
  • Bucknell sported a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
  • No cards were issued to either side.
  • Carr, Gianino, Tyburczy and senior Morgan Weaver played the full 90 minutes.
NOTES
  • After securing one point in her first 10 matches, Porta is on a three-game points streak, totaling five in that span.
  • Aronson potted her first collegiate goal, marking the second consecutive game a Terrier has achieved that feat.
  • Stickelman has scored in three straight games, accruing nine points during that stretch to share the Patriot League lead during conference play.
  • Gianino is the first Terrier to record eight assists in one season since Jessica Luscinski in 2011. The pair are tied for the fifth-most helpers in one campaign.
  • Carr has compiled three shutouts in her last four matches.
  • During its three-game winning streak, BU is outscoring its opponents 11-2.
  • Bucknell's lead in the all-time series now sits at 8-7-4 as the Terriers have won consecutive regular season contests over the Bison for the first time since 2013-15.
UP NEXT
  • BU starts a two-game homestand on Wednesday (Oct. 15), hosting Holy Cross in a Turnpike Trophy bout on Women in Sports Night. Opening kick is scheduled for 6 p.m.
