Men's Swimming & Diving Places Second at Dartmouth Invitational

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. – The Boston University men’s swimming and diving team finished in second at the Dartmouth Invitational which was held Friday and Saturday (Jan. 25-26) at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.

The Terriers finished with 716 points coming in second behind host Dartmouth (1,109). Massachusetts took third with 654.50 points followed by Boston College (512.50), Connecticut (384) and Maine (143).

The Terriers started off the morning session with a second-place showing in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Connor Stuewe, Mario Caballero, Brandon Funk and Ryan Bach combined for a time of 1:34.48.

BU placed two swimmers in the top five in the 400 IM with Alex Pokornowski claiming fourth (4:10.57) and Tanner Cridland taking fifth (4:10.61). The Terriers then took sixth and seventh in the 100 butterfly with Funk (51.85) and Bach (52.31), respectively.

Andy Vazquez posted BU’s top time in the 200 freestyle, clocking in second at 1:43.42 before Caballero earned BU’s first individual victory of the session with a win in the 100 breaststroke (58.15). Jeff Thomas also finished in the top five with a time of 59.33 for third place.

Stuewe also picked up a victory, as he won the 100 backstroke in 50.62. Freshman Mun Hon Lee placed third in 51.24.

Junior Jared Scheck led BU in the diving events, finishing third from the 1-meter board with a score of 281.10. Brandon Weiss claimed eighth (225.75) while Jake Frankenfield finishing in ninth (208.70).

In the afternoon session, Pokornowski started the Terriers off with a second-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:24.46. Stuewe followed with second in the 200 backstroke (1:52.25) while Nik Astashinsky took fifth (1:55.08).

Caballero later finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.60) while Lee was victorious in the 200 butterfly (1:51.98). Thomas took fourth (1:56.51) while Cridland (1:57.54) and Funk (1:57.59) took fifth and sixth, respectively.

The Terriers finished the meet with a second-place showing in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Vazquez, Thomas, Cridland and James Sundquist combined for a time of 3:11.77. BU returns to the pool on Saturday (Feb. 2) for the Terriers final dual meet of the season. BU hosts Boston College at the Competition Pool beginning at 1:30 p.m.
