WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston University field hockey team scored early and then added another goal in the closing minutes to come away with a 2-0 victory at Holy Cross on Friday evening. The Terriers improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in Patriot League play.
Sophomore Sofi Laurito scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season just 3:25 into the game on an impressive individual effort. With 1:32 remaining in regulation, freshman Hester van der Laan provided an insurance goal off a corner.
Junior goalkeeper Valentina Cerda Eimbcke earned her second shutout of the season but only needed to make two saves. BU held a 16-4 shot advantage despite allowing eight corners. The Terriers earned seven corners on the night.
Just over three minutes into the contest, Laurito took a lead pass outside the BU zone and dribbled through the Crusader defense before entering the circle on the right side. Her shot hopped over Holy Cross goalkeeper Kat Matchett and into the cage for what ended up being her third game-winning goal of the season.
BU allowed five first-half corners, but the defense stepped up each time. Thirteen of the Terriers' 16 shots came in the opening half and they settled for the 1-0 lead going into the break.
The visitors continued to stifle the Crusaders in the second half, allowing only one shot after halftime.
On BU's seventh and final corner of the evening, the play was set up for senior Anne Fruitema at the top of the circle. She passed off to van der Laan on the left side, where the rookie flicked the ball to the back of the net for her third goal of the season.
Holy Cross, which got an eight-save performance by Matchett, fall to 3-7 overall with an 0-2 Patriot League mark with the loss.
The Terriers will return to action on Sunday (Oct. 6) when they play host to No. 13 Massachusetts. Game time at New Balance Field is set for 3 p.m.
