CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Playing its sixth consecutive road game, the Boston University women’s basketball team suffered a 63-52 setback at crosstown rival Boston College on Wednesday night at Conte Forum. The Terriers fall to 3-7 on the season while the Eagles even their record to 5-5.
Senior Danielle Callahan led the Terriers with 11 points while sophomore Clodagh Scannell also reached double-digits with 10 points. Junior Whitney Turner led BU on the boards with five rebounds.
Five players reached double-digits for the Eagles with Kristen Doherty scoring a team-high 14 points. Lauren Engeln was second on the team with 13 points while Katie Zenevitch posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
BU finished the game with a 27.1 percent (16-of-59) field goal percentage. The Terriers attempted a school-record 37 3-pointers, but only converted 27.0 percent (10-of-37) of their attempts. BC shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) for the game and went 6-of-20 for its 3-point attempts.
The Eagles held a 47-33 lead on the boards. The Terriers were able to turn 13 BC turnovers into 12 points while only committing nine turnovers on their end.
BU opened the game with a pair of treys from Callahan and freshman Sarah Hope to jump out to an early 6-2 lead. The Terriers took their largest advantage of the first half with 11:36 on the clock, as junior Mollie McKendrick hit a layup to put BU on top, 12-7. BU held the lead and was up 20-19 before calling a timeout with 5:12 remaining in the opening period. The Eagles went ahead for the first time out of the break with a basket from Doherty that ignited a 6-0 run for BC to take control, 26-20.
After the final media timeout of the half taken at 2:33, Callahan sank her third 3-pointer of the first period to cut BU’s deficit in half. McKendrick hit a jumper to make it a one-point game in the final minute but Doherty hit another basket with seven seconds remaining to send the Eagles into halftime with a 28-25 lead.
Senior Melissa Gallo tied the game at 30-30 almost three minutes into the second half before the Eagles started an 8-0 run to retake the lead. The Terriers managed four points from the free throw line but were held without a field goal for almost nine minutes before Scannell sank her first trey of the game with 8:17 to play. The sophomore guard added another 3-pointer to cut the Terriers’ deficit to nine, 51-42, on BU’s next possession but another 8-0 stretch by the Eagles increased their advantage.
Freshman Meghan Green ended BC’s run with her first career 3-pointer with 4:29 on the clock and Scannell added a pair of shots from the charity stripe to make it 59-47 with 4:02 to go. Green sank her second shot from beyond the arc and Scannell added a layup in the final two minutes, as BC secured the 63-52 victory.
After six games on the road, the Terriers will return home to host a game for the first time since Nov. 19, when BU welcomes Marist to Case Gym on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
