Marist Uses Second-Half Surge to Down Terriers, 76-65

BOSTON – Despite a career-high 19 points from freshman Sarah Hope, along with two other players scoring in double-digits, the Boston University women’s basketball team dropped a 76-65 decision to Marist on Saturday afternoon at Case Gym. BU drops to 3-8 on the season while Marist, the MAAC preseason favorite, improves to 5-4.

Hope connected on a career-high six 3-pointers to lead the Terriers with 19 points while senior Melissa Gallo, who earned her first start of the season, finished second with 12 points. Senior Danielle Callahan contributed 10 points and a team-high five assists while senior Rashidat Agboola led BU with eight points.

Madeline Blais led Marist with a game-high 27 points while Leanne Ockenden added 18 points and Casey Dulin chipped in 14 points. Emma O’Connor led the Red Foxes with 12 rebounds.

After shooting 46.7 percent in the first half, BU finished with a 36.9 (24-of-65) field goal percentage and a 40.0 percent clip (12-of-30) from beyond the arc. Marist shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) for the game and went 9-of-19 (47.4 percent) from beyond the arc. The Terriers connected on 5-of-12 free throw attempts (41.7 percent) while Marist shot 15-of-20 (75 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Red Foxes dominated the Terriers on the boards, 46-29, but committed 14 turnovers, compared to eight for BU.

The Terriers held the advantage at the break behind a season-high 38 first half points. BU went up 5-1 early in the game but allowed Marist to take the lead almost three minutes into the game with a layup from Ockenden. The teams traded baskets and the lead over the next few minutes and were knotted at 16-16 following a jumper from Gallo with 13:13 to play.

A 9-2 spurt, including a pair of treys from Gallo, put BU on top, 24-18. The Red Foxes did not allow the Terriers lead to grow larger than five points and then brought the margin down to one point, 27-26, with a layup from Dulin with 9:02 to go.

The Terriers matched their largest lead, 37-31, following a layup and pair of free throws from senior Whitney Turner with 5:32 remaining on the clock. Marist scored the next five points to make it a one-point game, 37-36, with 2:22 to play before half. Hope hit 1-of-2 shots from the line in the final seconds to send the Terriers into the break with a 38-36 lead.

Marist opened the second half with a 16-3 run the spanned the first six and a half minutes of the period to take a 52-41 lead. The Terriers hit only three field goals, all from beyond the arc, in the first 10 minutes of the second half, including a pair from sophomore Clodagh Scannell that cut Marist’s lead with 57-50, with 9:05 on the clock.

The Red Foxes regained a double-digit advantage and pushed their lead to 14 points, 64-50, with a layup from Brittni Lai. Hope connected on a trey and Agboola added a layup to bring BU within nine, 64-55, with 5:56 to play, but that was as close as the Terriers would get. Marist used a 7-0 run to push its advantage out 76-59. Hope hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 90 seconds, as BU fell, 76-65.

BU will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule with a pair of games at former America East foes. The Terriers will first travel to Durham, N.H., on Sunday, Dec. 22, to take on New Hampshire. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
