DENVER – Seven different players found the back of the net but it was not enough, as the Boston University women’s lacrosse team dropped a 13-10 decision to Denver Wednesday night in the Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Three Terriers found the back of the net for the first time in their careers, as sophomore Lindsay Weiner and freshmen Ally Adams and Jill Horka all posted two goals against the Pioneers. Adams and Weiner each added an assist to lead BU (1-3) with three points.
Junior Elizabeth Morse also registered a multi-point night with a goal and assist while senior Danielle Etrasco and juniors Becca Church and Sydney Godett were BU’s other goal scorers. Sophomore Siobhan McCarthy added an assist for the Terriers.
Junior Christina Sheridan recorded nine saves against the Pioneers. Denver held a 13-12 advantage in draw controls while BU collected 13 ground balls compared to the Pioneers’ 10.
The Pioneers struck first, scoring a minute and 15 seconds into the game with a tally from Jen Etzel. It was the first of three straight goals from Denver to open the game before Adams scored the first goal of her career with 25:48 on the clock to put BU on the board.
After Denver scored on a free position attempt to go up 4-1, Etrasco cut the Pioneer’s lead in half with an assist from Adams. Horka then posted her first goal as a Terrier on a free position shot less than a minute later to cut the Pioneer’s lead to 4-3.
Following a yellow card assessed to Etrasco, the Pioneers’ Rachael McKinnon gave Denver a two-goal lead with just over 19 minutes remaining in the half. Denver added a pair of goals over the next eight minutes and the Terriers called a timeout with 11:53 to play before the break.
Each team scored in the final 10 minutes of the half with Weiner’s first career goal making it an 8-4 game in favor of the Pioneers after the first 30 minutes of action.
The Terriers opened the second half on a 3-0 run, as Adams and Weiner each scored their second goals of the game and Godett added a tally to bring the Terriers within one, 8-7, with 24:11 to play.
Denver added a pair of goals before Church got the Terriers within two, 10-8, with a free position shot with 12:38 remaining. Just over a minute later, Horka added her second tally of the night to cut the Terriers’ deficit to one, 10-9.
The Pioneers took a 12-9 lead and BU called a timeout with 6:13 to play. The Terriers had a few scoring opportunities out of the break but were unable to find the back of the net.
Denver took a 13-9 lead with 3:43 to play. Morse pulled BU within three goals, 13-10, less than a minute later but the Pioneers held on for the 13-10 victory.
