BOSTON – The Boston University women’s lacrosse team suffered a 17-9 setback to Albany on Wednesday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU falls to 3-6 on the season with the loss and 0-2 in America East action while Albany improves to 7-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.
Trailing 12-7 at the half, the Terriers held Albany to five goals in the second stanza with junior goalkeeper Christina Sheridan posting seven of her nine saves in the second period.
Senior Danielle Etrasco led BU with five goals while junior Elizabeth Morse was second on the team with two tallies. Freshmen Jill Horka and Sofia Robins accounted for the Terriers’ other two goals while sophomore Lindsay Weiner dished out a pair of assists. Freshman Ally Adams also recorded a helper.
BU finished with a 15-13 advantage in draw controls while Albany gathered 18 ground balls compared to 12 for the Terriers.
Albany scored first just over three minutes into the contest but Etrasco netted a pair of goals within two minutes of each other to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Morse then extended BU’s advantage to 3-1 with a free position shot at 19:23.
The Great Danes responded with six unanswered goals before Etrasco got the Terriers back on the board with a tally to make it a 7-4 game. The attack scored again 18 seconds later with an assist from Weiner and Horka found the back of the net to bring BU within one, 7-6, with 9:40 to go in the first half.
Albany posted the next three goals to take a 10-6 lead before Robins converted on a free position shot with 2:56 remaining in the period. The Great Danes added a pair of goals before the break to take a 12-7 lead into half time.
BU came out and scored the first goal of the second half, as Etrasco and Weiner connected again for Etrasco’s fifth goal of the game. The Great Danes then dominated possession and scored five unanswered goals over a period of 11 minutes to expand their lead to 17-8 with 2:45 to play.
Morse scored the Terriers’ final goal of the game with 2:11 to play on a free position shot, as Albany held on for the 17-9 victory.
BU returns to action on Saturday (April 6) when the Terriers travel to Burlington, Vt., to face the Vermont Catamounts. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
