Academics: The United States Naval Academy (also known as Annapolis or Navy)  is one of the most selective colleges in the country with only 7.5 percent of applicants accepted. Applicants must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a congressional representative. Graduates earn a Bachelor in Science degree and go on to serve in the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps.
The most popular majors are: political science and government; economics; aerospace, aeronautical and astronautical/space engineering; and oceanography. The student-faculty ratio is 9:1 and 60.7 percent of the school's classes have fewer than 20 students. The average freshman retention rate, an indicator of student satisfaction, is 96.8 percent.
Every midshipman's academic program begins with a core curriculum that includes courses in engineering, science, mathematics, humanities and social science. The goal is a broad based education to qualify students for practically any career field in the Navy or Marine Corps. At the same time, the schools majors program gives students  the opportunity to develop a particular area of academic interest.
Moral Education: Moral development is a fundamental element of all aspects of the Naval Academy experience. The Naval Academy's program is a four-year integrated continuum that focuses on the attributes of integrity, honor, and mutual respect. This program helps midshipmen develop a clearer sense of their own moral beliefs and the ability to articulate them. Honor is emphasized through the Honor Concept of the Brigade of Midshipmen-a system originally formulated in 1951 which states, "Midshipmen are persons of integrity: they stand for that which is right."
Physical Education: The Naval Academy teaches the importance of being physically fit and prepared for stressful situations. The physical requirements of Plebe Summer training, four years of physical education and year-round athletics also develop pride, teamwork and leadership.
Notable alumni: U.S. President Jimmy Carter; astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space; U.S. Senator John McCain; NASA Administrator Charles Bolden
Mission: "To develop Midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government."

Visiting Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy: Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay area is a great place for people who love to spend time on the water.
Attracting more than four million visitors a year,  Annapolis has been welcoming people to its shores for more than 300 years.  For many, Annapolis is synonymous with the United States Naval Academy. However, this world famous institution isn't even the oldest college in town. That distinction belongs to St.. John's College, founded in 1696 as King William's School. It is the third oldest college in the United States, after Harvard and William and Mary.
Today, Annapolis is a very popular port of call for international sailors. Its anchorage features transoms from all over the world. In the fall, the largest in the water boat shows in the world are held on successive weekends for sail and power enthusiasts.
Take time to walk in the city and peer over the garden gates. Visit the area's many shops or relax on a water taxi in the harbor and enjoy the area's rich history. Beneath the bay lies the hull of the Peggy Stewart, burned during a tax revolt, and the great yacht "America" of America's Cup fame. The working-class dock, where PT boats and mine sweepers for two world wars were built, now supports the technologies used by Olympic sailors who train and consider Annapolis "America's Sailing Capital."
