BALTIMORE, Md. – Playing fellow Patriot League newcomer Loyola Maryland for the first time in program history, the Boston University women’s basketball team defeated the Greyhounds, 70-60, on Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena. The Terriers snapped a three-game losing streak to move to 7-12 on the season and 2-4 in the Patriot League while Loyola falls to 4-13 on the year and 1-5 in PL play.
Making her first start at BU, sophomore Clodagh Scannell scored a career-high 17 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Terriers with 17 points. She was one of four players to reach double-digits, as senior Rashidat Agboola added 13 points to go with 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Fellow senior Danielle Callahan added 13 points and four assists while classmate Whitney Turner added 10 points and five rebounds. Freshman Sarah Hope finished with nine points, all from beyond the arc while fellow freshman Courtney Latham pulled down a career-high 10 boards.
Nai Brown led the Greyhounds with a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds while Lisa Mirarchi finished with 10 points.
BU finished the game with a 36.8 field goal percentage, converting 21-of-57 attempts. The Terriers shot 10-of-28 from beyond the arc (35.7 percent) and went 18-for-27 at the free throw line. Loyola shot 42.6 percent from the field (23-of-54) and went 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line. The Terriers dominated on the boards, 45-31.
The Terriers led by as many as 14 points in the first half but allowed the Greyhounds to close the gap to 28-22 in the final minutes of the opening period. BU scored the first six points of the game and were paced by four 3-pointers by Scannell to take an 18-6 lead before the under 12 minute media timeout called at 11:33.
Loyola cut the deficit to 10 points out of the break as the teams traded baskets on the next few possessions. BU took its largest lead of the half, 24-10, following a jumper from junior Mollie McKendrick and a pair of free throws from Agboola. The Terriers matched their 14-point lead later in the game following a drive to the hoop from Callahan and a layup from Poppe to go up 28-14 with 6:28 on the clock.
The Terriers were held scoreless for the remainder of the half, as Loyola closed out the period on an 8-0 run to make it a 28-22 game at the break. Loyola added to its run at the beginning of the second period and pulled within two points in the opening minute. The Terriers responded with a 10-0 run, including treys from Callahan and Hope, to go up 38-28 with 15:28 to play.
Scannell’s fifth 3-pointer of the game gave BU a 13-point lead and the Terriers maintained a double-digit lead with a triple from Hope. The Greyhounds made it a six-point game, 51-45, with a trey from Nicole Krusen, but free throw from Turner and a basket by Agboola pushed BU’s lead back to double-digits.
Maintaining their double-digit lead, Callahan sank a pair of shots from the charity stripe to extend the Terriers lead to 13, 66-53, with 2:14 to play. A 7-0 spurt from the Greyhounds made it a six-point game with just under a minute to play but BU went 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to secure its 70-60 victory.
The Terriers return to Case Gym for a two-game home stand beginning on Wednesday (Jan. 22) against American. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
