@BUGameDayThe sixth-ranked Boston University women's ice hockey team will begin its Hockey East schedule this weekend when the Terriers travel to Maine for a weekend series. Game time for both Friday and Saturday is set for 2 p.m.
BU (3-1-0, 0-0-0 WHEA) is coming off a sweep of reigning NCAA champion Clarkson last weekend, outscoring the Golden Knights by an 8-3 margin over the two games. The Terriers boast one of the top offenses in the country, ranking fourth with an average of 3.75 goals per game. BU has also been strong in terms of puck possession, boasting a Corsi For percentage of 57.2. The Terriers have allowed an average of 22 shots on goal per game, which ranks second in the league and seventh in the nation.
The Terriers have also been much more disciplined this season, as evidenced by the team taking just 12 penalties for 24 minutes in the first four games this year. Through four games last year, the Terriers had been whistled for 22 penalties (44 minutes). Their average of 6.0 penalty minutes per game is the second-lowest in the country behind Clarkson (5.7).
All four forward lines and all three defensive pairings got on the score sheet last weekend, with Hockey East Player of the Week Marie-Philip Poulin leading the way. The senior captain tallied three goals and added an assist for a four-point weekend. Junior Sarah Lefort (1g, 3a) also had four points while freshman Victoria Bach joined juniors Jordan Juron and Kayla Tutino with two points in two games.
A true rotation has developed between the pipes over the first four games, as sophomore Victoria Hanson and freshman Erin O'Neil have each started two tilts. Hanson improved to 2-0-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage thanks to Friday's victory, while O'Neil notched her first collegiate victory with a 21-save performance on Saturday.
Maine (2-4-1, 1-0-0 WHEA) opened the season with back-to-back wins but are 0-4-1 since, including a sweep at the hands of No. 7 Quinnipiac last weekend in Hamden, Conn. The Black Bears have only allowed more than two goals once but have been shut out in all four losses, including a pair of 1-0 defeats and a 2-0 loss at Quinnipiac this past Saturday. Maine has averaged just 1.86 goals per game but allowed only an average of one goal per game this year. The Black Bears have also gone 0-for-22 on the power play this season.
Senior Jennifer More leads the team with two goals and three points. Classmate Brittany Huneke is the only player with two assists while 10 different players have at least one point. Senior Meghann Treacy has started six games between the pipes for Maine. She is 2-4-0 with a .947 save percentage and a 1.78 goals-against average.
Following this weekend's series, the Terriers will host their home opener on Tuesday, Oct. 28, when Northeastern visits Walter Brown Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
