BOSTON - Senior Mollie McKendrick scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, but the Boston University women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 75-74 setback at Northeastern on Friday afternoon at Solomon Court.

BU hung tough in front of a loud crowd for the entire game in head coach Katy Steding's Terrier debut. After trailing by as many as nine points in the second half, the Terriers took the lead with under three minutes to play and held a three-point advantage with less than one minute remaining. Northeastern got two free throws with 16 seconds on the clock, making the first one but missing the second. The Huskies got the offensive rebound, however, and hit a layup with nine seconds to go. McKendrick got a good look from beyond the arc at the buzzer but the shot did not fall.

Two other Terriers finished in double figures, with junior Coldagh Scannell (14 points) and sophomore Meghan Green (11) joining McKendrick as the team's top point producers on Friday. McKendrick and Green each grabbed eight rebounds while junior Troi Melton led BU with four assists, three steals and zero turnovers. Melton was huge in the second half, going 3-for-5 from the field and scoring all six of her points.

All 10 Terriers played on Friday and nine of them had at least two points. Three freshmen made their collegiate debuts, with Corinne Williams leading the charge thanks to six points and six rebounds. Kara Sheftic scored five points and grabbed four boards while Erin Bayram came off the bench and had two huge offensive rebounds and subsequent putbacks in the second half.

It was an entertaining contest that included 12 lead changes. BU held a one-point edge late in the first half before NU went on a 7-1 run to take a 37-32 lead into the locker room. The Terriers fell behind by eight less than two minutes into the second half before going on a 10-2 run to tie the game, 44-44, with 14:07 to play. Melton had all six of her points and all three of her steals in that stretch.

The Huskies extended their lead back to nine with 8:15 remaining before BU mounted another comeback that was paced by three-pointers from Scannell and sophomore Sarah Hope. The Terriers tied the game, 68-68, with 4:12 left in regulation. After NU converted a three-point play to go back up by two, Bayram brought BU back level.

The Terriers took a one point lead before Scannell extended it to three after forcing a turnover and sinking two fouls shots with 55 seconds to go. NU made one of two free throws shortly after to cut the BU lead to two before taking the final lead of the contest late in the proceedings.

BU will host its home opener on Monday night when the Terriers welcome Harvard to the roof. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
