HAMILTON, N.Y. -
A first half lead and impressive goalkeeping down the stretch gave the Boston University women's soccer team a 2-0 win over Navy in the Patriot League Semifinal on a cold and snowy Friday night. The Terriers (13-4-3) will face regular season champion Colgate on Sunday at 1 p.m. to defend their Patriot League Title.
It was a late night for BU and the Mids, as the snow delayed the first game two hours. The two squads started the match at 9:15 p.m. on a frozen field covered in ice which made it difficult for both teams to find offensive tries throughout the game.
The Terriers went on the attack for the first time in the 12th minute when Katherine Lim and Jenna Fisher got a pair of shots off, both of which were blocked by Navy defenders.
The Mids put on the pressure for the ensuing 10 minutes, getting three shots off, though none on net due to excellent defensive play. BU got its offense moving soon after, however, beginning with an Ana Cuffia shot that missed slipping under the crossbar due to an athletic save by Navy's goalkeeper.
Two minutes later, Clare Pleuler found the back of the net to give BU the lead and eventual win. After a Terrier corner kick failed to set up a play, Pleuler managed to intercept the Navy clearing attempt and took a shot from 25 yards out, tucking it in the top left corner to earn her first game-winner of the season.
Boston U. continued to pressure in the second half while preventing the Mids from any shots on net for the first 26 minutes.
It wasn't long before the Terriers added another goal to the board, scoring the lead-extender in the 59th minute. After Jamie Turchi was fouled at the top of the 18-yard box, Cuffia took advantage of the free kick and sent just under the crossbar to give BU a 2-0 lead.
The Mids weren't done yet, however, and tested Alyssa Parisi down the stretch, sending three shots her way, all of which she saved to preserve her fourth shutout of the year. Parisi's four saves throughout the course of the game was a season high for matches that ended in regulation.
