POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Early success from beyond the arc propelled Marist to a 77-50 win over the Boston University women's basketball team on Saturday night at McCann Arena. The Red Foxes shot 13-of-16 from long range in the first half.
The Terriers (3-7) were led by Meghan Green, who scored 15 points, and Kara Sheftic who matched her career-high with 12 points, going 10-of-10 from the free throw line. Courtney Latham led the team in rebounds (9), assists (3) and steals (3), while Clodagh Scannell led the team with a career-best two blocks.
The Red Foxes (5-5) had four players in double-digit scoring, with Sydney Coffey leading the team with 19 points, tallying 6-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Madeline Blais and Payton Birchmeier each scored 14 points and netted four 3-pointers apiece. Allie Clement rounded out Marist's double-figure scorers with 13 points.
BU outrebounded Marist 42-38 including 11-6 on offensive boards. The Terriers led the Red Foxes in second-chance points (7-4) and fast break points (6-4) but Marist's long-range shooting accounted for 42 points, a differential that ultimately decided the game.
Marist got off to a hot start, opening the game on an 11-2 run over the first four minutes that set the pace for the rest of the game. The Red Foxes used its 13-of-16 3-point shooting to steadily add to its advantage over the course of the first half until they took a 57-24 lead at halftime.
The Terriers outscored Marist in the second half, 26-20 but it wasn't enough to overcome what became a 36-point deficit early in the second half. BU took advantage of free-throws, going 11-for-11 in the second period to stay perfect from the foul line.
BU takes a two-week break before it returns home for a matchup with Massachusetts on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. in Case Gym.
