BOSTON - Sophomore Courtney Latham totaled career-highs in points and steals but it wasn't enough for the Boston University women's basketball team to overcome a 17-point first-half deficit and dropped its second home game of the season, 78-57 to Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon at Case Gym.
Latham tallied 14 points and five steals while senior Mollie McKendrick also contributed 14 and a team-high six rebounds to the Terrier total.
BU (3-8) shot 30 percent from the field while UMass (6-6) scored on 50.9 percent of its tries. The biggest difference-maker was play in the post with the Minutewomen outscoring the Terriers 42-14 in the paint.
After a dominant start to the game by the Terriers, UMass took control of the lead midway through the first half and did not let up for the rest of the game. BU led by as much as five points to start the contest but the Minutewomen went on an 8-0 run to gain an advantage they would not relinquish.
UMass' leading scorer did not disappoint her squad, with Kim Pierre-Louis contributing 15 of the Minutewomen's 44 first-half points. Kymber Hill was also in double-digit scoring by halftime, tallying 10 against the Terriers.
Latham broke out in the first half and scored 10 points by the time she headed to the locker room, just one shy of her career high.
The Minutewomen continued their exceptional play into the second stanza, with Pierre-Louis adding 18 more to her total to reach a career-high 33 points.
The Terriers open Patriot League play on Wednesday afternoon against Holy Cross at 2 p.m. in Case Gym.
