BOSTON - Kara Sheftic scored a career-high 17 points as the Boston University women's basketball team dropped its first conference matchup of the season to Holy Cross on Wednesday afternoon at Case Gym.
Sheftic's 17 was the most scored by any player in the game and she also contributed a personal best four blocks and six rebounds, which tied her career high. Meghan Green also scored in double-figures, picking up 10 points including eight in the second half.
Turnovers were the Terriers' Achilles heel against the Crusaders. BU committed 20, which translated into 26 points for Holy Cross (5-9) while the Terriers (3-9) only scored nine points off of the Crusaders' 15 miscues.
Neither squad shot exceptionally well from the field, with BU hitting 34.6 percent of its shots and Holy Cross making 39 percent. The Crusaders gained some of its advantage from long range, however, sinking eight 3-pointers to BU's three.
The first half began as a one-woman show as Sheftic scored BU's first nine points of the game. The Terriers went over 14 minutes with just one player on the scoreboard, a span that included a scoring drought of over five minutes during which BU committed five turnovers, three of which were steals by the Crusaders.
Those five minutes enabled Holy Cross to gain a 14 point lead, an advantage that was bolstered in the final minutes due to a lack of field goals by the Terriers, who were able to score just one in the final 5:27.
The second half was much more successful for BU, with the Terriers more than doubling their output in the final 20 minutes. After scoring just 14 points in the first half, Boston U. was able to post 34 points in the second, due in large part to contributions by Green, who scored eight, Sarah Hope and Sheftic, who each scored seven and Clodagh Scannell, who found her shot from long range and hit two consecutive 3-pointers to add six to the BU tally.
Ultimately the Terriers could not overcome the first half deficit and dropped its first Patriot League game to the Crusaders.
BU is back in action on Saturday when the team heads to Lehigh for a matchup with the Mountain Hawks at 2 p.m.
