KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island used a second-half surge to take a 56-48 victory over the Boston University women's basketball team on Tuesday night at the Ryan Center. Kara Sheftic led the team with a career-high 12 points against URI.
Sheftic also contributed six rebounds and two blocks while Mollie McKendrick had a near double-double with 10 points and nine boards. She also dished out a team-high five assists.
The Terriers fall to 3-6 on the season with their third straight loss while the Rams improve to 7-3, claiming its sixth-straight victory.
Four Rams scored in double figures, with Megan Straumann leading the charge with 14 points off of 4-of-8 shooting from long range.
The Terriers out-rebounded URI 51-31 including 21 offensive boards but was only able to tally 10 second-chance points, one of the biggest difference-makers in the game. Turnovers were also costly for BU with 19 errors turning into 23 points for Rhode Island.
Freshman Corrine Williams, who started the second half, had a personal-best seven points while classmate Meghan Doogan notched the first points of her career on a three-point shot.
Boston U. started the game strong, commanding as much as a six point lead midway through the first half, which it maintained until the four-minute mark. It was then that the Rams went on a 8-3 run to go into halftime with a two-point advantage.
Rhode Island did not relent coming out of the locker room and went on a 7-2 run to increase its lead to seven points. The Rams steadily added to their advantage until they found their largest lead, 16-points, with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. A 10-0 run, which included two three-pointers from Sarah Hope, cut the deficit down to six points but the Terriers were unable to mount a successful comeback and dropped their third-straight game.
BU is back in action on Saturday when the Terriers travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for a game with Marist at 7 p.m.
