The Boston University women's ice hockey team will face Providence in a pivotal home-and-home series that begins Saturday (3 p.m.) at Agganis Arena and closes on Sunday (2 p.m.) at Schneider Arena.
BU (19-10-1, 12-5-0 WHEA) has already locked up home ice for the Hockey East quarterfinals but can still finish anywhere from first to fourth in the league standings. Providence (11-19-0, 6-11-0 WHEA) enters the weekend in sixth place, seven points behind fourth-place Vermont.
The Terriers need help from Maine this weekend in order to have a chance at their second straight regular-season trophy. The Black Bears host Boston College this weekend and if BC secures a sweep, it will clinch the top spot. If BU sweeps Providence this weekend, the Terriers will clinch at least the second seed.
Post-Beanpot life has been good for BU over the last two years, as the Terriers own a 9-0-0 record over the last two seasons following the final Tuesday of the Beanpot. BU dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to Harvard in Tuesday's consolation game, but received goals from sophomore Sarah Lefort and senior captain Louise Warren. The duo has accounted for 49 of the team's 93 goals this season.
Lefort leads the nation with 27 markers and Warren is third with 22 goals. BU remains the only school to boast two 20-goal scorers and both have a chance to add to those totals against Providence, a team against which they have enjoyed much success. Lefort has three goals and eight assists in five games against Providence while Warren has three goals and seven helpers against the Friars.
Senior goaltender Kerrin Sperry owns an 8-2-1 all-time record against the Friars, including a 42-save shutout in last year’s Hockey East semifinal. She usually saves her best for February within league play, as Sperry owns a 13-0-0 Hockey East record over the last three Februaries. She has allowed more than two goals just twice in that stretch.
Providence enters the weekend having lost three in a row and five of its last six games since a 4-3 win over BU on Jan. 17. The Friars are in sixth place entering the weekend and need wins and help to climb back into the home-ice picture. All five losses have been to five different teams, most recently a 3-1 loss against Northeastern on Feb. 8.
The Friars have scored one goal or less in their last six games, including a 1-0 win. Senior Corinne Buie leads the team in points (24) and assists (17) while freshman Cassidy Carels is the only Friar with more than eight goals this season. Her 13 goals lead all league rookies. Sophomore Sarah Bryant owns a 2.82 goals-against average and an .885 save percentage.
Following this weekend's series, BU will close out its regular-season schedule with a home-and-home series with Boston College on Feb. 22-23.
