Army Defeats Women's Basketball, 75-48

BOSTON - The Boston University women's basketball team dropped a 75-48 decision to Army on Wednesday night at Case Gym. The Terriers fall to 11-19 (6-11 Patriot League) on the season while Army improves to 21-7 overall and 13-4 in league action.

Senior Melissa Gallo was the lone Terrier to reach double-digits with 10 points while junior Mollie McKendrick led BU with 11 rebounds to go with six points and six assists. Seniors Danielle Callahan and Rashidat Agboola posted eight points each.

Although the Terriers' held the Patriot League's leading scorer Kelsey Minato to 11 points, Army senior Jen Hazlett led the Black Knights with a game-high 21 points and 16 rebounds for a double-double. Jean Parker also reached double figures with 12 points by going a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc.

The Terriers shot 18-of-55 (32.7 percent) for the night while making 5-of-17 3-pointers and 7-of-12 shots from the free throw line. Army connected on 30-of-57 shots (52.6 percent) and went 10-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Black Knights shot 5-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Army held a commanding 41-27 advantage on the boards while both teams committed eight turnovers each.

The Black Knights jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first four and half minutes of the game but sophomore Clodagh Scannell stopped the spurt with a trey to start a 7-0 run for the Terriers to tie the game at 9-9. After a Minato free throw, Brianna Johnson scored Army's first field goal in almost six minutes with a shot from beyond the arc.

Gallo responded with a 3-pointer on the other end to give BU a one-point lead. The teams traded baskets and a pair of free throws from Gallo made it 18-18 with 7:36 to play. The game became a back-and-forth affair for the next two minutes before Army broke a 22-22 tie with seven consecutive points.

Callahan got BU back on the board with a triple to make it a four-point game, 29-25, with 2:48 to go in the half but Army closed out the opening period with a pair of unanswered baskets to take a 33-25 lead into the break.

After a pair of free throws from Agboola to open the second half, Army used a 24-6 run over the span of seven minutes to grab a 57-33 lead with 11:33 to play. Callahan briefly halted the streak with a pair of free throws, but the Black Knights went on to score back-to-back 3-pointers to extend their lead.

Minato gave Army its largest lead of the game, 70-38, following a pair of free throws with 6:54 on the clock. The Terriers brought the deficit down to 71-46 following a pair of triples from Callahan and Gallo. Freshman Courtney Latham added a basket in the final seconds, as Army completed its season sweep of the Terriers with a 75-48 victory.

The Terriers will conclude the regular season on Saturday (March 1) when they host Holy Cross at Case Gym for Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and BU will honors its four members of the class of 2014 in a pregame ceremony.

Tonight's loss coupled with Lafayette's 81-70 victory over Colgate means that the Leopards have won the battle for the sixth seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament and a bye to the quarterfinals. The Terriers have clinched the seventh seed and will now host a first round game next Tuesday (March 4) at Case Gym. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
