The Boston University women's ice hockey team raised over $3,000 and awareness for the fight against breast cancer over the weekend in support of the Hockey East Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer program.

During the BU men's hockey game against UMass Lowell on Friday night, the women's team sold rubber pucks to fans as part of their "Chuck A Puck" fundraiser. Participants were allowed to throw the pucks onto the ice during the game's second intermission with the chance of winning a prize if their puck was selected. On Saturday, the team donned pink sweaters for their game against UNH. All proceeds from ticket sales, raffles and special merchandise sales went to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Friends of Mel Foundation..

Entering its eigth season, the Hockey East Skating Strides program has raised over $250,000 for various breast cancer charities. At the same time, the program has garnered interest in the sport, all across the conference, with increased attendance at, and awareness of, the women's ice hockey programs at all eight member institutions.

Skating Strides has also given student-athletes the opportunity to give back to the communities in which they study and play hockey. Charitable donations have been made by Skating Strides to the Friends of Mel Foundation, which in turn, distributes funds throughout New England.
