BALTIMORE, Md. – Facing its fourth ranked opponent of the season, the Boston University women’s lacrosse team was defeated by No. 14 Johns Hopkins, 11-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. After its sixth straight road game, BU falls to 1-5 (1-0 Patriot League) on the season.
Playing the top-ranked defense in the NCAA (4.57 goals allowed per game), the Terriers tied Towson for the most goals scored against Johns Hopkins this season. The game was tied at 4-4 after the first 30 minutes before the Blue Jays outscored the Terriers, 7-4, in the second half to improve to 8-0 (0-0 American Lacrosse Conference).
Senior Elizabeth Morse led the Terriers with a season-high four goals, including a hat trick in the first half, while junior Jenna Boarman matched her career-high with three assists. Senior Becca Church added a pair of tallies while redshirt sophomore Mallory Collins and sophomore Jill Horka each scored once.
Freshman Caroline Meegan, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week, finished with six saves and a pair of ground balls. Sophomore Remy Nolan collected a career-best four ground balls while senior Sydney Godett led the team in draw controls (two) and caused turnovers (two).
Dene’ DiMartino led the Blue Jays with four goals while Jenna Reifler added a pair of tallies. Taylor D’Amore and DiMartino combined to win 11 of Johns Hopkins' 13 draw controls.
KC Emerson made six saves for the Blue Jays before being replaced by Caroline Federico in the final 19:34 minutes of action. Federico gave up two goals and did not record a stop.
The game was even at 4-4 after the opening 30 minutes as neither team managed to take more than a one-goal lead. After Hopkins scored the game’s first goal, Morse recorded her first of three first-half tallies with an assist from Boarman. About three minutes later, Morse struck again with a free position shot to give the Terriers’ a 2-1 advantage with 21:25 on the clock. The Blue Jays tied the game at 18:3 with a goal from Sarah Taylor but BU regained the advantage with a free position shot from Church.
The Blue Jays tied the game for the third time with a strike about halfway through the period then took a 4-3 advantage on a free position shot from Jen Cook with 9:24 to go. Morse completed her hat trick with three minutes on the clock to even the game at 4-4 and force the Blue Jays into a timeout. Meegan made a pair of key saves in the final minutes, including a stop of a breakaway attempt by Cook as time expired to keep the game tied at 4-4.
The back-and-forth game continued through the first 10 minutes of the second half before Cook scored the first of four unanswered goals for the Blue Jays to build a 10-6 lead with 5:16 to play. BU got back on the board quickly by winning the following draw control and Collins finding the back of the net eight seconds later but D’Amore answered for Hopkins with a strike seven seconds after. Morse scored her fourth goal of the game with 34 seconds remaining, as the Blue Jays held on for the 11-8 victory.
Johns Hopkins held a 28-18 advantage in shots and a 13-8 lead in draw controls while both teams finished with 17 ground balls.
After playing its first six games on the road, BU will make its Nickerson Field debut on Wednesday (March 19) when the Terriers host Holy Cross in Patriot League action. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
