BU Hosts No. 14 Loyola Maryland Saturday

BOSTON – The Boston University women’s lacrosse team will play its sixth ranked opponent of the season on Saturday (April 12) when the Terriers host No. 14 Loyola Maryland at Nickerson Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.

Saturday is the Terriers’ annual Friends of Jaclyn game. The Terriers are a proud supporter of the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for children and their families who are battling brain tumors, as well as to raise awareness about the disease. On April 3, 2010, the Terriers adopted eight-year-old Hannah O’Brien of Weymouth, Mass., through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Hannah was diagnosed with Anaplastic Ependymoma brain tumor in November 2006. Since then, Hannah has not only become BU’s biggest cheerleader, but truly a huge part of the women’s lacrosse team and a younger sister to the Terrier family. Hannah and her family will be honored at Nickerson Field prior to the game.

BU will also welcome back former Terrier Caitlin Webb (’10) who is preparing to run the Boston Marathon in the name of Hannah O’Brien and Massachusetts General Hospital’s fight against pediatric cancer. In addition, Saturday is BU Youth Lacrosse Day and all youth lacrosse teams can receive free admission to the game. To request free tickets, please visit GoTerriers.com/youthlax. Following the game, the women’s lacrosse team will be signing autographs.The first 250 fans on Saturday will receive a free BU lacrosse t-shirt.

Ranked No. 24 in the first official NCAA RPI of the season, BU (6-7, 4-2 Patriot League) looks to snap a two-game losing streak when it hosts fellow Patriot League newcomer Loyola (10-4, 6-0 PL). The Greyhounds are on an eight-game win streak and stand in first place in the PL standings.

Both BU and Loyola have clinched a spot in the six-team Patriot League tournament, along with Navy and Lehigh. Holy Cross and Colgate can claim the final two spots with wins on Saturday.

The all-time series between BU and Loyola is even 2-2. The Greyhounds won the first two meetings in the series that began in 2003 while the Terriers have won the last two match-ups, including a 14-10 victory the last time they played on March 14, 2007.

BU enters the game averaging 9.23 goals per game with a balanced attack that features six double-digit goal scorers. Senior Becca Church leads the way with 19 goals while classmate Elizabeth Morse is second with 17 tallies. Junior Lindsay Weiner leads the team with 13 assists and is the only Terrier to have posted double-digits in both assists and goals (10).

Senior Christina Sheridan made her second start of the season in BU’s last outing and owns a 9.49 goals against average with a .408 save percentage in 183:24 minutes of work. Freshman Caroline Meegan has started 12 games for the Terriers with a 10.65 goals against average and .419 save percentage.

The Greyhounds rank second in the Patriot League with 12.79 goals per game and feature eight double-digit goal scorers, including senior Marlee Paton who leads the team with 35 tallies. Junior Annie Thomas is second on the squad with 27 goals and has dished out a team-high 28 assists to lead Loyola with 55 points.

Sophomore Molly Wolf has been the Greyhounds’ starter throughout the season and has held opponents to 8.46 goals per game while stopping .470 percent of the shots she faces.

Following Saturday’s game, BU will take a break from Patriot League play to visit local rival Harvard on Wednesday (April 16). The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.
