Terriers Fall at Colgate, 11-7

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Boston University women’s lacrosse team suffered an 11-7 setback to Colgate on Wednesday afternoon at Tyler’s Field.

Despite the loss, the Terriers secured a spot in the six-team Patriot League tournament with Lafayette's 12-9 win over Bucknell on Wednesday night. BU joins Loyola, Navy and Lehigh as the four teams that have clinched a berth. 

BU (6-7, 4-2 Patriot League) had three players record two points against Colgate (5-7, 3-3 PL) including senior Elizabeth Morse and junior Lindsay Weiner, who each scored two goals. Sophomore Ally Adams added a goal and an assist for the Terriers.

Senior Becca Church and sophomore Jill Horka also scored while senior Nell Burdis dished out the first assist of her career. Fellow senior Christina Sheridan made five saves in goal in her first start since BU’s season opener.

Colgate held the edge in shots, 21-20, and won 12-of-20 draw controls. The Raiders entered the game ranked second in the Patriot League with 10.27 caused turnovers per game and committed 11 takeaways against the Terriers. BU had an 18-17 advantage in ground balls.

Weiner gave BU its only lead of the game just over a minute into the contest when she scored after the Terriers won the opening draw control but Colgate evened the score at 1-1 about two minutes later. It was the first of three unanswered tallies for the Raiders, as they took a 3-1 lead following a free position goal by Sarah Bowles with 18:47 on the clock.

Horka brought the Terriers’ within one with her unassisted tally at the 14:47 mark to extend her point-streak to nine games. Morse then tied the game at 3-3 with an assist from Adams as a result of a Colgate turnover. Adams picked up the ground ball and dished it to Morse for the equalizer with 9:35 to go in the opening half.

The teams traded a pair of free position goals to tie the game again at 4-4 but Colgate took a 5-4 lead into the break following an unassisted marker by Alison Flood with 3:16 to play.

The Raiders opened the scoring in the second half to take a 6-4 lead then held BU off the board until Church found the back of the net almost midway through the period. The Raiders won the following draw control and quickly scored to regain the two-goal advantage then added another tally from Bowles following a timeout to go ahead 8-5.

BU won the following draw control and had a pair of shot attempts before Morse collected a ground ball and fired her shot past Jennie Berglin to make it an 8-6 affair with just over 12 minutes remaining.

Colgate tacked on three unanswered goals to extend its lead to 11-6 following a strike from Kallan Murray with 1:41 on the clock. The Terriers found the back of net with five seconds remaining with a goal from Adams, as the Raiders clinched the 11-7 victory.

BU will return to Nickerson Field on Saturday (April 12) to host No. 14 Loyola Maryland at 1 p.m. Saturday is BU Youth Lacrosse Day and all youth lacrosse teams can receive free admission to the game.
