West Windsor, N.J. - Racing in its first IRA National Championship Regatta on Saturday, the Boston University women's lightweight rowing team advanced both its V8 and V4 boats through to the IRA Grand Finals to be held on Sunday.

The varsity eight boat advanced directly by finishing second in its morning heat while the varsity four advanced by finishing third in the afternoon repechage.

"I think today was a great success," said women's lightweight rowing head coach Malcolm Doldron on Saturday. "We met our goal as a team today. Since the beginning of the fall we talked about putting ourselves in a position to race for the national championship. Both boats have done that and we are happy."

The Terriers lightweight varsity eight boat, coxed by freshman Allie Triola and stroked by junior Carol Chase Peterson, took second in its early morning heat behind only Radcliffe and ahead of boats from Princeton, Tulsa and Georgetown. The second place finish meant the Terriers advanced directly to Sunday's national championship Grand Final race.

The lightweight varsity four boat took third in its morning heat and needed to compete in the afternoon repechage to advance. Needing a top four finish, the V4 delivered, finishing third. Coxed by junior Anna Martin and stroked by junior Shelby Saunders, the V4 finished behind Radcliffe and Fordham but ahead of Princeton and MIT.

The varsity four will race in the Grand Final on Sunday at 9 a.m. against crews from Radcliffe, Princeton, Wisconsin, Stanford and Fordham.

The varsity eight will compete at 11:55 a.m. against Radcliffe, Princeton, Wisconsin, Bucknell and four-time defending lightweight varsity eight champion Stanford.
