CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Boston University lightweight rowing program opened its tenure at the 2025 IRA National Championship Regatta on Saturday, May 31 on the Cooper River. BU's crews all posted top-four performances in the morning heats, with its Lightweight Double taking first in the opening race.
Storms from Friday night created choppy water with occasional whitecaps that resembled Charles River racing for BU. Wind gusts traveling east reached 22 miles per hour to create a substantial cross-tailwind from the port side.
BU's Lightweight Double, powered by
Kylie Lough (bow) and
Catherine Clark (stroke), ignited the morning with a win in Heat 1 with a time of 8:04.800, gradually building their lead throughout the entire piece while keeper runner-up Georgetown at bay. That performance was the second-best time in the event.
The Terrier Lightweight 4+, coxed by
Heather Shinn and stroked by
Cece Mason, was one of seven crews in the entry. MIT and Princeton battled for the top two spots, while BU comfortably slid into third after crossing the finish line in 7:38.320, nearly six seconds in front of Harvard-Radcliffe.
BU's Lightweight 8+, coxed by
Mayberry Mark and stroked by
Mia Seibert, capped the morning with a fourth-place result in 6:43.910. Radcliffe, Princeton and Georgetown made up the top three positions.
The finals will begin at 8:10 a.m. for BU, starting with the Double in Lane 3. The Lightweight 4+ also occupies Lane 3 in its Grand Final, starting at 8:20 a.m. The Lightweight 8+ is scheduled for 10:20 a.m. with the Terriers in Lane 5.
