BOSTON – Eight Boston University athletic programs have earned Public Recognition Awards for their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the entire four-year cohort ending with the 2012-13 academic year. The award is used to recognize teams that finish in the top 10 percent of its respective sport.
The Terriers’ men’s cross country, men’s indoor and outdoor track & field, wrestling, softball, women’s golf, women’s soccer and women’s tennis teams were among the 1,049 of over 6,400 NCAA programs recognized.
Six of those teams earned perfect scores of 1000 - men’s cross country, men’s indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, women’s golf and women’s tennis.
The wrestling team joins the men’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams in earning the award for the third straight year while the women’s tennis team has achieved the feat in four consecutive years. Both the men’s cross country and softball teams are receiving the honor for the fifth straight year while the golf team has captured the honor for the ninth consecutive season, having been recognized every year since the award was implemented in 2005.
BU is one of 146 schools that have one or more teams that have won nine or more awards in a row. This is the fourth consecutive year that at least eight BU teams have finished in the top 10 percent of their respective sports. A record 11 squads achieved that feat in 2012.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.
