The Boston University men's soccer team will begin its 2014 campaign this weekend with a pair of home contests at Nickerson Field. The Terriers will welcome Fordham on Friday (7:15 p.m.) before hosting Iona on Sunday (8 p.m.).
Due to BU's move-in weekend, spectators are advised to park at 808 Commonwealth Avenue if the Babcock Street Garage and Lot underneath New Balance Field is full.
Fans should note that Friday's fixture against Fordham was moved from 7 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. It will be just the second time that the two teams will have met; BU bested Fordham, 4-0, in 2007. The Terriers will face Iona for the first time on Sunday.
Head coach Neil Roberts enters his 30th season at the helm of a Terrier squad that returns 22 letter winners and welcomes 13 newcomers to the 2014 squad. Top returners include 2013 All-Patriot League Second Team honoree Dominique Badji, who led the Terriers with a personal-best six goals last season, and 2011 America East Defender of the Year Kelvin Madzongwe, who has only played a combined 11 games the last two years due to injury. Badji will serve as co-captain alongside senior Jordan Barker, who had four assists last season.
Junior Lucas McBride scored four goals last year to finish second on the squad in that category. Other returnees with multiple goals include sophomore Felix De Bona and junior Jeroen Blugh, who each found the back of the net twice last year. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Gilbert is back after starting 15 games last year. He posted six shutouts, two assists and was second in the Patriot League with an average of 4.47 saves per game.
Fordham finished last year with a 5-11-1 mark, including a 2-5-1 record in the Atlantic 10. The roster will be young thanks to 18 newcomers, but the Rams' top two scorers from a year ago will be back in sophomores Jon Agostino and Andrew Hickey. Each player tallied twice last year to lead the team with four points. Senior Sean Brailey is the lone returnee that saw time at keeper last year, though it was just one game. He made six saves and allowed two goals in the loss.
Iona was predicted to finish third in the MAAC preseason poll and will face Boston College at Nickerson Field on Friday at 4:15. Senior Ignacio Maganto was selected as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. He finished with 21 points a season ago on nine goals and three assists. The Gaels return 20 players from last year's squad that posted a 10-6-3 record and boasted two All-MAAC selections in Maganto and Michael Holzer.
Following this weekend's contests, BU will travel to Loudonville, New York, to face Siena on Sept. 3. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
